AUGUST 20, 1860
Karen looked back once more at her precious home. Well, not her home any more. She had sold it to Walter at a somewhat fair price. She was leaving Dreamville and moving back east where she had relatives that would help her out. She hated deserting her father's dream, but since it didn't look like Teaspoon would ever find her horses, she had decided to leave.
She had searched for her horses, too, that had been stolen a week ago. She had searched Jacy's property thinking that she might have taken her horses since that's where they had found Gavin's horses. But there wasn't any sign of them.
She thought long and hard about saying goodbye to Ike, but she couldn't do it. She hated goodbyes, and her heart was breaking enough without having to see him. Karen knew if she saw Ike that she would break down crying, and she didn't want it to be harder than it already was to leave.
She mounted and headed for town. She had made one very close friend while living here, and Karen knew if she didn't tell her goodbye that she would regret it. So she was heading into town to tell Samantha goodbye.
