DECEMBER 15, 1861
"Read
that line again," Heyes prompted Kid.
Kid
cleared his throat and read a part of Jessie's entry in her diary. "I found out that
my two sisters were arrested and thrown in an orphanage. Unfortunately, they were taken to
an orphanage that was full, so they were transported to another orphanage, but no one will
tell
me to which orphanage it was, so I'll have to keep looking for them. The orphanage they
were suppose to be at was Sullivan Orphanage Home."
"Ok,
now read the other part,"
"I'm
so fed up and it looks like it should be frustrated, but I don't think she spelled it
right. I think it should have-"
Joshua
sternly interrupted, "Kid, I don't care about her spelling. Just tell me what she
says."
"I've
been searching and searching orphanages, but haven't found Jeannie and Julianne yet, but I
have heard about a fella that has been bartending over at Riverwest Saloon in Little
Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake Utah, who plays the guitar, and the description sounds
like Jake, so I'm heading there to investigate. That's the last entry in her diary."
"Then
that's where we have to go to start our search for her." Heyes said, "but first
we need to check out that orphanage. Maybe since you're their brother and older they'll
tell you where they sent them."
"We've
got to head back to Wyoming then, Heyes." Thaddeus sat the diary down on the stand.
"I sure am tired of there. I was hoping to spend some time here for a while. Maybe
even get a respectable job for a little while. I didn't want to spend our hard earned cash
that we got for those turkeys so quickly."
"I
know it, but I thought if we could get into a card game this weekend that we could double
our turkey money and then head back to Wyoming." He put the last piece of apple pie
into his mouth, and then pulled out a couple of bills to pay for his supper.
"Excuse
me, you two. I'm Walter Simmons. I own this hotel, and I heard from Jedidiah Davis that
you two might be looking for work."
"Work?"
Thaddeus asked with a grin on his face. "We had just been talking about that very
subject."
"Good,
good! I need a hotel clerk to work here. "See that lady over there now." He
pointed to the desk and the two fellas looked in that direction. They saw that she was
writing. "She's going to be working some as a cook here in the hotel, so I need
someone to take over her duties. I also need another bank teller, so that my other bank
teller
can
work a little bit more here at the hotel, too. So what do you say fellas, can I hire
you?"
"Well,
my partner and I will have to think it over." Heyes hated turning anybody down right
away.
"Ok,
just let me know as soon as you can. Oh, and this here supper is on me." Mr. Simmons
told Marta before leaving the dining room that the two gentlemen didn't have to pay for
their meal this evening.
That
night Heyes and Kid discussed the offer. They finally decided to stick around Dreamville
for a little while longer. They would tell the hotel owner that they would work for him
for at least as long as they were here in town. Joshua would be the bank teller because he
was better at figures then Kid, and Thaddeus would be the hotel clerk. It was ironic that
he would be working in a bank since his only other consistent prior occupation had been a
bank robber.
