INTRODUCING TALLY!

Tallyhoe had received a letter that wasn’t a good report at all. He thought by now he would have had half the town citizens leaving. Tally was very impatient. When he wanted something, he wanted it now.

He should have known better than to leave it to somebody else to accomplish something for him. If you want something done right, you do it yourself. And that’s what he intended to do.

After finding out that Dev knew some of the citizens in Dreamville, he asked her if he could ride up front with her. She agreed. He learned a lot about the town, and who was who in town. Although Dev couldn’t tell him much about the person who he really wanted to know about, but that was ok. He really didn’t need to know anything to destroy someone’s life. Besides he would blend in and then strike.

After the last waystation before hitting Dreamville, Tally rode on the inside of the stagecoach. As he saw a farmhouse not too far off, he made a quick decision and hollered to Dev to stop. She asked him what was up and he told her that he wanted off here.

Startled she said, "Here!" He nodded his head and grabbed his bag from the top of the coach. As he took off for the farmhouse Dev started the horses again, and her and her passengers rode on out of sight.

A few days later Tally rode into Dreamville. He stabled his horse at the livery, and then went to the hotel to check in. He saw the PEG lying on the counter, and he picked it up. Edward said, "If you want to read it, you have to pay for it." Tally frowned at him as he tossed a coin onto the counter. Tally asked for a room and Edward handed him a key. Tally took his paper and bag to his room. He had decided to get himself settled in, and then start making his moves.

INTRODUCING LIAM!

Liam came to this country from Ireland forty-five years ago. His new bride, Eleanor, and him felt it would be a good place to raise a family, to get a fresh start on their new life together. And life was good for many years.

Eleanor was only able to bear one child, a beautiful daughter they named Margaret. They worked hard on their farm, moving once from Virginia to near Denver. Their darling Margaret met, and married, a good man by the name of Ethan James. It was a sad day that they decided to move from their farm next to Margaret's parents into Denver. Ethan decided to look at a store there for sale. They felt the children would be better off growing up in a town where they could attend school.

But before they could even leave for Denver, Indians attacked them. Liam's daughter and her husband were killed and the young boy whisked away. Somehow their wee granddaughter was spared and they’ve raised her ever since.

They moved to Dreamville six months ago after selling their farm. Liam does some gardening mostly now, and sells his produce for some extra money. Eleanor does some mending for money.

Then last month the Army found them with their grandson in tow. It was quite a sight seeing the boy trussed up, but they soon found out why the Army had done so. Cayden has been a handful ever since, trying to run away and fighting every attempt they make to educate him and clean him up. He constantly tries Liam’s patience. Liam even had to start locking Cayden in his room at night so he couldn’t run off.

Liam even sent off for information on boarding schools, even though he can’t really afford it. But him and Eleanor aren’t as young as they used to be. It would be best for all of them if they could afford a boarding school for Cayden since Liam doesn’t know what to do.

The sheriff, Teaspoon, has been very helpful. He has several young men working for him. The riders for the Pony Express have been keeping a bit of an eye on Cayden for Liam and Eleanor. Their help has been a blessing in disguise.

INTRODUCING ELEANOR!

Life in the States was good. Her husband Liam and Eleanor raised a beautiful daughter named Margaret, named after Eleanor’s mother. They had a successful farm, first in Virginia, then near Denver.

But a part of Eleanor’s life ended the day they were told of the death of their beloved daughter and her husband Ethan. Their neighbors on the farm, the Johansens, found Margaret and her husband the morning after the Indians killed them. They found little Erin beneath the floorboards of their cabin, crying from hunger, and brought her to Liam an Eleanor. Even the joy of still having the wee bairn to hold and to raise didn’t soften the hurt and pain of loosing their only child and her husband. And the lad! Lord only knew what had happened to him!

But they found out all right. The poor boy was raised by the Indians for nine long years. The day the Army rode up with him tied onto a horse, well, Eleanor’s heart just broke again, what he must have gone through!

But what Eleanor doesn’t understand is that the boy wants to go back! Try as they might, he keeps trying to run off. He refuses to let Eleanor hug him, to show him how much she loves him and missed him. Her husband is at the end of his rope, trying to deal with the boy. He just doesn’t know what to do with him!

Some of those young men that work for the Pony Express are trying to help. There’s even a young half -breed Indian among them. Hopefully he can talk some sense into Cayden. But all the boys have shown some interest in helping out.

Eleanor just hopes someone can get through to the lad. She can’t bear the thought of losing him again.

INTRODUCING CAYDEN!

They tell Cayden that he is fourteen, and he has to take their word for that. Cayden was raised by the Cheyenne where he was called High Eagle. His Cheyenne father said that they traded him with the Arapaho when he was younger. He felt that Cayden would make a good addition to his family because Cayden stood up to his captors, showing much courage and bravery. He taught Cayden to hunt and to fight. Cayden learned to ride and track. He insisted that Cayden talk to the other white captives so he would not lose his English tongue, thinking he would be able to help the tribe trade with the whites.

He was happy there until the blue coats came. They killed most of his tribe, his Cheyenne mother and father included. Those not killed, they took prisoner. And they took Cayden away along with the white slaves. He was kept at a fort until they found the people they called his grandparents, but he does not know them. They brought him to this place called Dreamville less than a moon ago.

Now they make him wear white mans clothes. They try to cut his hair, but he has stopped them from doing that so far. They make him sit in a building with other children and his sister. He doesn't remember his sister either. The man he is to call Grandfather says that he is a troublemaker and that he will break him if it takes his last breath. He overheard the Grandfather tell the one called Grandmother that he wishes they hadn’t brought him here, that it was easier thinking he was dead. He wishes they hadn’t brought him here, too.

INTRODUCING ERIN!

Erin is 9 and lives with her Gram and Gramps in Dreamville. Her family moved here about six months ago from near Denver where they had a farm. She really likes it here, and she has lots of new friends.

Her best friend is Jemima. Her and Jemima like to play with their dolls together. Their teacher says that they talk too much. Erin has a cat named Muffy and a dog named Fred.

But about a month ago the Army came, and they brought Erin’s older brother, Cayden with them. Erin can tell that her brother hates it here even though he doesn’t talk to her much. He doesn’t talk to anybody much. He’s tried to run away twice and their Gramps sends the sheriff out after him. Gramps is always watching him, afraid he’ll do something wrong, which he usually does. Her brother tries to eat with his hands. He can’t read or write and Gramps is making him go to school with her. Gramps even locks him in his room at night to try and keep him from running off. That makes Gram cry, but she cries even more when he runs away.

Erin doesn’t really understand why her brother acts the way he does. It just makes everyone unhappy. Gramps says Cayden’s wild like the Indians that raised him. He’s even talking about sending him to a boarding school back East. Erin hopes Gramps doesn’t. He’s the only brother Erin has and she doesn’t want to loose him.
