JULY 9, 1861
John and Ernest rode out to the Starshine
Haven ranch to see Jewel. As they rode in, they saw Jedidiah and Jewel, or at least they
presumed it was Jewel, mounting a couple of horses. They rode up to them and John asked,
"Where are you going?"
"I thought I'd take Jewel into town.
Even though she's never been there before, I'm hoping something might catch her eye that
will trigger her memory. Nothing around here is working."
"Can we come along?" John
inquired, and Jedidiah nodded.
All four of them headed off towards town.
Jacy watched from the house window, praying that her sister wouldn't remember anything.
She had tried to stop them again, but this time her excuses wouldn't work. She just hoped
and prayed that her sister's memory wouldn't get triggered while in town. She also hoped
that Cody would be out on a run. She definitely didn't want her sister to meet him.
Because if anyone could probably spark her into remembering, it would probably be Cody.
Jedidiah had promised her that they wouldn't be gone long. She hoped he would keep his
word and that they would return soon. She had thought about going with them, but she was
afraid that Jimmy might want to go too, so she decided against going.
On their way to town, Jewel really wished
that she could tell her brother that she knew who she really was, but she couldn't, at
least not yet. Besides he might not even believe her. It had taken her a long enough time
to convince Melissa who she really was, and she had grown up with her.
They went from place to place, but she
pretended not to remember anything. And they didn't tell anybody that she was Jewel
instead of Jacy. She just smiled and nodded her head to the people she met. She had told
Jedidiah that she didn't want to meet anybody in town, at least not yet. He had agreed to
just let them all think that she was Jacy, and on the way to town John and Ernest had
agreed, too.
The last place they went into was the
saloon. It wasn't a proper place to take a lady, but none of the other places had worked
on Jewel regaining her memory, so they decided to try it. They went in, and John ordered a
beer for him, Ernest and Jedidiah. He ordered a sarsaparilla for Jewel. Jedidiah didn't
care too much for beer, but he didn't want to change his order when John was buying. He
didn't want the men to think he was a boy instead of a man.
"I guess nothing in here sparks your
memory either?" Ernest asked. Jewel looked around pretending to try to look at things
that would trigger her memory. Finally, she shook her head. Jedidiah talked with Richard
about if he could on a regular basis use the back room for business meetings. He wanted to
have it there sometimes, so that the gentleman would be able to have drinks and not have
to go all the way back to his place. Richard agreed, especially since Jedidiah was paying
generously for the privilege.
The men and Jewel finished their drinks and
just as they were about to leave, Cody came in. Cody was surprised to see them, especially
Jacy with them. He wasn't sure what to say when he entered. Jedidiah took the lead.
"Good afternoon, Cody."
Cody nodded and said, "Good
afternoon." Since he was hurting because of Jacy, he didn't say anything more.
Ernest, John, Jedidiah, and Jewel left. As
Jewel walked pass Cody, she kept her eyes looking down. She was afraid that her expression
might mystify Cody, and besides the fellas didn't even know that she knew Cody.
On their way home, John said, "Well,
that was a bust. Jewel still doesn't remember anything. Right?" He looked at her. She
nodded and frowned. She wished she could tell John and Ernest that she really did know who
they were. She was sad that she couldn't tell them, but the fellas thought that she was
sad because she couldn't remember. "It's ok if you don't remember. You'll just have
to start making new memories."
"You know if she doesn't remember
anything here, maybe we should take her to Wyoming where you live, John. She just might
start to remember there. Because she was there last." Jedidiah suggested. He had
exhausted all his ideas.
"I think that's a good idea."
Ernest said.
"We can go on my train. It will be back
here in Dreamville on Friday." Jedidiah planned on going to. He wouldn't let his
sister go alone, especially not in this condition.
"We?" John asked.
"Yes, I want to go along. I won't send
my sister anywhere by herself." Jedidiah stated in a tone that said there wouldn't be
any more discussion on that matter.
"It sounds good to me. What about it
Jewel? Do you want to go to my place? It might trigger your memory." John asked her.
Jewel thought about it for a few minutes.
The wedding was Wednesday, and afterwards everybody would know that she was Jacy and not
Jewel, so she wouldn't have to go Monday. So it wouldn't hurt if she agreed to do it.
Besides they would think it was strange if she said no. And they would want to know why
she didn't want to go, and she couldn't think of a good enough reason not to go, so she
nodded her head.
When they arrived back home, Jacy came
running out of the house to ask if her sister had remembered anything. When she found out
that she hadn't, she pretended to be disappointed. But she quickly returned to her happy
self and led her sister into the house, reassuring her that everything was going to be
fine. Jedidiah grabbed the reins of the horse that Jewel was riding and took him back home
to his ranch. Ernest and John returned to town. John went to send a letter to his ranch
informing his employees that he would be returning shortly.
