APRIL 20, 1861

John tossed the letter to his desk. He couldn't believe it. What the heck was Ernest talking about. Kitten in Dreamville. She couldn't be. She was here. When John got upset or couldn't understand something, he would rant and rave out loud. He took to doing this now. "What in the world is going on here. How can Kitten be here and in Dreamville. Ernest must be mistaken. There was no way that Kitten could be in Dreamville. She was right here with him." He continued to pace back and forth trying to figure out the puzzle. Unbeknownst to him Kitten was listening outside the door.

Kitten had come from the kitchen where she had been preparing a picnic lunch for her and John. She went to the study to see if John was finished with his work, so that they could go spend some time outdoors enjoying nature for a change because John was always so busy with work. She had finally talked him into taking a day off, and she wasn't going to let him off the hook. But as she approached the study, she heard John talking. So as not to disturb him, she waited outside the door until she thought it would be a good time to enter. Stunned at learning that Ernest was in Dreamville, and even more stunned that there was someone in Dreamville impersonating her, her mouth flew open in astonishment.

Kitten tiptoed past the study and went upstairs. She packed a few things, sneaked back to the kitchen, grabbed some grub, and then hurried out to the barn where she saddled a horse and took off for Dreamville. She didn't know what she would do when she got there. But she just had to see this person that Ernest thought was her. She couldn't imagine anybody pretending to be her. Why would they want to? But even if there was someone in Dreamville impersonating her, wouldn't they be in jail? Maybe they had found the real horse thieves though. In that case the fake was living her life. She was living her life with Melissa and with Cody. Cody!! This really steamed Kitten up. She didn't like the thought of anybody being close to Cody but her.

John finally decided that he would see if Kitten would take a trip with him. He knew that the railroad ran through Dreamville. They could go for a train ride. Kitten was always trying to get him to take some time off from work, so that should be enough of an explanation for her. He didn't have to tell her where they were going just that they were going to go visit someone. That wasn't a lie because they would be going to visit Ernest in Dreamville, but the little details like that she didn't need to know.

John decided the sooner the better. He couldn't wait to see this girl that looked like Kitten, so he went to look for his Kitten in the kitchen. Finding only the picnic basket, he went looking for Kitten in her bedroom. He opened the door and saw her teddy bear sitting on her pillow. It looked like something was attached to it, so he took a closer look.

After reading the note that he took off 'Boss', the name she had given the fuzzy bear that he had won at a carnival for her, his first response was that she was out all on her own. He feared for her safety. So John quickly got together some supplies and a couple of his men to head out looking for Kitten. He left Ed, his second in command, in charge of the ranch. He trusted him immensely.

Kitten's trail was easy to follow, but she was probably a couple of hours ahead of them. He figured if nothing happened, if she stopped for the night and if they kept moving they would overtake her. He had wanted to go to Dreamville, but with her, not following her. And it would have been quicker by train than horseback. If he found her, maybe he could talk her into taking the train. There were lots of questions rolling around his brain, and he couldn't wait to find Kitten to find out some of the answers if he could.
