ARRIVING HOME

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

Jimmy was driving the buggy with the pretty 16 year-old co-owner of the newspaper sitting beside him. She was very pretty Jimmy thought. But his heart was already taken, but he could see why Cody liked her. She was very nice and attractive. Maybe he could smooth things over with Jacy for Cody. He could at least try. "So Jacy how have you been?"

"Fine." Jacy replied.

Short and sweet and to the point, Jimmy thought. "I heard about your date with Cody and . . ."

"Let me put you straight Mr. Hickok. It was not a date. I do not think of fishing as a date. Fishing of all things for a first date." Jacy exclaimed.

"What do you consider a date? He did ask you to go fishin right? And you went."

"We were friends thats all. And we went fishin. Before you have a first date you must ask permission to court a person. I don't think of going somewhere and doing something with someone constitutes a first date. If thats true then this would be our third date, Jimmy, and you would be dating both my sister and me. And further more if Im going on a date, I want to know its a date!" Jacys anger grew by the second as her voice got louder and louder.

"I understand, but Cody really likes you. Is . . . could . . . well, do you have another beau?" Jimmy inquired because Cody had mentioned to him that she had been out riding with Ted Brown when he had went to apologize to her.

"NO . . . I dont have a beau!"

"Do you like Cody? I know its none of my business but . . ."

"Yes, youre right. Its none of your business." Jacy sternly said.

The rest of the ride home neither one spoke a word.
