OCTOBER 23, 1860 - NOVEMBER 5, 1860
Jimmy and Lee rode fast to reach their destination but it still took them six days to arrive at the fort. Turning to Lee, Jimmy said, "Lee, I was thinking on the way back that we could stop by my sisters. It would give you a chance to dress like a girl. We can take our time getting back."
Lee thought about it for a minute then said, "Sure, I would like to do that. You don't think your sister will mind us just dropping in?"
"No, she wont mind. Its been awhile since I've seen her and Nathan."
They got to the fort, delivered the mail, got the free supplies they needed and started towards home. As they pulled to a stop in front of the hotel, Jimmy noticed how nervous Lee was. He gave her a smile then said, "Why don't you go get us a room while I go let Selinda know we're in town. It should give you time to relax."
Lee nodded and headed for the hotel. Jimmy watched her disappear into the hotel then he headed down the street to his sisters house.
Lee ordered a bath and headed to their room.
As Jimmy was heading back to the hotel he spotted a dress in the store window and knew it would be perfect on Lee. He purchased the dress and headed for the hotel. Knocking lightly on the door he heard Lee softly call out to him to come into the room. Handing her the package after shutting the door he said, "Here I saw this and thought you might like it."
Lee opened the package and unfolded the dress, "Oh Jimmy, its pretty. You shouldn't have."
"I know, but I saw it and was hoping you would wear it tonight when we go for dinner at Nathans and Selinda's."
Lee nodded and changed into the dress. She felt as shy as a school girl.
Jimmy quickly changed and cleaned up. He offered his arm and she took it. He led her from the hotel and down the street to his sisters house. They spent the next few hours there enjoying a nice friendly evening.
"We really should be heading back to the hotel. We have an early start back home in the morning. Thanks for dinner, Selinda." Jimmy said as he stood and pulled out Lees chair.
He brought her shawl over and wrapped it around her and then offered his arm. He led her out the door and down the street to the hotel. The stars were shinning, and Jimmy felt all was right with the world. He had his girl and it was a beautiful night. They walked for awhile and then went back to the hotel and continued with their romantic night.
The next morning they enjoyed an early breakfast and then started off for Dreamville. On their way it started to rain. They rode till they come across an abandoned house. They looked at each other and nodded then. They got their horses into the barn and settled. They grabbed their saddlebags and headed for the house.
After lighting the lantern they looked around. Jimmy found some wood and started a fire for the night. The house seemed to come alive. Lee was sitting by he fire writing to Lynn when she heard what sounded like someone upstairs. Looking up she saw Jimmy sitting by the wall opposite of her cleaning his guns. Spotting movement she looked up and saw what she thought was a knife pointed at Jimmy. Seeing it move towards him. Lee yelled, "Jimmy move."
Jimmy looked up and saw a knife heading for him. He quickly moved to the side. The knife hit the wall. Then they heard a woman screaming from upstairs. Jimmy quickly put his guns back together. Lee drew her gun. They walked through the house and didn't find anyone.
The rain continued to fall. "We don't have a choice but to stay. I don't want to risk the horses getting hurt." Jimmy said as he stoked the fire.
"Why don't you get some sleep, Lee. We'll take turns keeping an eye out. I don't know whats going on here, and I don't like it." Jimmy said sensing Lee was nervousness.
Lee nodded and laid on her bedroll trying to sleep. She knew she would be okay as long as Jimmy was with her. As Jimmy watched Lee sleep, he also watched as things went flying around the room. The screams sent chills up his spine.
After what seemed like a long night, Jimmy noticed the rain had stopped. He woke Lee, and they saddled their horses and left the house behind. They took their time. They were afraid that no one would believe what had happened at the house, so they decided not to say a word. It took them two more days to get back but they finally reached the station.
