OCTOBER 13, 1860

Jimmy and Lee sat at the table in the bunkhouse. Teaspoon sat across from them. The other riders and Rachel were all doing their chores or out on runs. Teaspoon had some time to think about how he could have missed both Lee and Corey being girls. They were two of the best riders he had. They were not only hard workers, but they rode just as fast if not faster than the others. Maybe that was because they were lighter than the boys. He had hired two girls without even knowing it. He wasn't so sure if he knew from the beginning if he would hire them, but Lee had proved herself to be a good rider and could take care of herself. If Corey would have asked for her job back, he would have given it to her. She had already proved that she could handle the work and take care of herself just as well as the boys. That was his only concern with girls riding for the Express -- what could happen to them when they went out alone on an overnight run.

"So, LeAnn, who else knows that you're a girl?" Teaspoon began.

"Well, Rachel knew from the beginning and the others found out around Thanksgiving. Caly also knows."

"How did the others find out?"

"Cody read a letter out loud that I was writing to my sister. I signed it LeAnn instead of Lee. Caly was here when that happened."

OK, now he did not feel so bad, the others didn't know until they had read a letter they should not have been reading anyway. "Would you feel more comfortable moving in with Rachel? We could do that if you wanted. Of course when other riders from other stations stay the night here, you would be back in the bunkhouse so that we don't tip off the Company."

Lee looked at Jimmy and knew that she did not want to move out of the bunkhouse. "Actually I feel safer in here. That way I don't have to play musical rooms. When other people from the Company come to evaluate us or whatever."

"OK, but I would think it wouldn't be wise to stay at other stations. You might want to stay at a nearby hotel when you can't make it back here for the night or set up a camp out on the trail."

"Teaspoon, I never do stay at other stations anyway." Lee smiled.

"You and Jimmy might also want to keep your relationship a secret from those who don't know that you're a girl."

Jimmy and Lee just nodded. They were already careful about that. "Lee, go ahead and do your chores." Lee left and Jimmy stayed where he was. "Jimmy, you hurt her, and you will have to answer to me."

"Yes, Sir." Jimmy said as Teaspoon left the bunkhouse.

Jimmy found Lee mucking out the stalls. "Lee, since Teaspoon knows now, I was wondering if you wanted to go with me to the Halloween Party at the Saunders. I mean it's a costume party so with a mask, no one would recognize you."

Lee smiled. This is what she wanted. "Sure. We just have to think on what costumes to get for us. And one with a mask for me."
