NOVEMBER 19, 1861

Jimmy and Lee had heard about how well things were going for the orphans and were glad that they were finding homes. However, after talking with Susan, they decided to make it all legal, and so the three of them went to see the judge.

“Hello, Your Honor?” Susan greeted.

“Yes?”

“May we talk to you?” Lee asked

“Sure.”

“My fiance and I would like to adopt a baby.” Jimmy stated.

“So you’re going to be married. That makes things a little easier, Mr. Hickok, but your reputation precedes you. And if that wasn’t enough, all of the babies have homes now.”

Susan spoke up. “Your Honor let me explain.” She told the judge her story, and how she knew that Jimmy and Lee could protect the baby and give a much better home than she ever could.”

“Oh I see. Well, you’re the mother of this child, and since you obviously know this young couple a lot better than I do, and I haven’t had the chance to talk to the towns people, I’ll leave it in your hands and I’ll have the adoption papers when I return in six months if you still want to give the baby to Mr. Hickok and his bride. When did you say that you’re getting married?”

“Christmas Day and if you’re invited if you’re around at that time.”

The judge smiled, “Alright then.  I’ll bring back the papers for all three of you to sign in six months.”
