JESSIE'S ARTICLE JAN. 8, 1960 |
| On
Friday on their first break, Jesse had overheard Rose telling Erin, Melissa, and Jemima
that she liked the article in the PEG called Dreamers Delight. She thought it was
neat that people put what they thought would be a great time on a date in the paper. If
she ever got up the courage, she would do it. She may never do it, but she loved reading
it. It gave her ideas about what her first date would be like. So since Rose reads the Dreamers Delight article, Jesse decided to deliver an article to Jacy, the newspaper owner, the following day. So as Cody was going to town that morning, Jesse asked for a ride. As he handed the article to Jacy, he told her that a friend of his wanted him to give it to her for the newspaper. Jesse takes the paper and quickly scans it after Jesse leaves. Jacy had seen the lad talking with a blond hair guy earlier today. Jacy thought it had to be him that had wrote it, and he had the boy deliver it. He has the most desirable smile. Does he want a girl that likes to fish and catch frogs? Yuck! Jacy went to the door and hollered, "Hey!" The boy turned around and Jacy motioned for him to come back. He did so thinking, Oh NO, she knows its me. When Jesse stopped right in front of Jacy, Jacy asked, "Does that fella with the blond hair that you were with, is he the one that likes to fish and catch frogs? Jesse was about to tell the truth, but then he changed his mind, for all he knew Cody might like to fish and catch frogs. "Yeah, he does." Jesse smirked. Jacy smiled. She had learned her first facts about the blond-haired guy. After a few minutes Jesse asked, "Is that all maam?" Jacy nodded her head and Jesse walked away. Shutting the door Jacy thought, now all I have to do is learn how to fish and catch frogs. Jacy didnt like doing either one, but she knew someone who did. As Jacy turned around she saw her. "Why are you smiling so Jacy?" Melissa asked. "And were you just talking to Jesse? "Who?" "Jesse, hes one of my classmates that works at the Pony Express. Remember I told you about him." "Oh yeah. Yeah you did. He just delivered this. He said a friend of his wrote it." Melissa read it and thought, it must be Jimmy. Thats perfect. Now I know what Jimmy likes in a girl. It has to be Jimmy because Jesse talks about him all the time. And earlier today she had seen Jesse and Jimmy talking across the street and pointing to their home. Breaking into Melissas thoughts, Jacy asked, "Melissa do you think you can teach me how to fish?" Melissa smiled. "Of course, when? "Now!" Jacy replied. "Lets go!" Melissa grabbed Jacys hand and pulled it out the door before Jacy changed her mind. Melissa and Jacy rode Braids out to a lake that Justin had told them about. The fishing expedition wasnt very fun at all. Jacy wouldnt touch a worm and Melissa had to bait the hook every time for her. Every time Jacy got a nibble, she got frustrated when she couldnt reel it in the first time and she would throw the pole at Melissa and tell her to do it. It was getting late in the day and Jacy was about ready to call it quits. For a while now they hadnt even got a bite which suited Jacy just fine because as long as she didnt get a fish on the line then she wouldnt have to reel one in. Melissa persuaded Jacy to hang in there and try again. If it wasnt for wanting to impress the blond-haired guy, Jacy probably would have gave up, but she was determined to have something in common with the man she madly had a crush on. Soon Jacy got another bite. She slowly reeled it in and brought the fish out of the water, but when Jacy saw it wiggling, she stepped back from it. "Well, you have to take it off the hook!" Melissa wailed. Jacy looked at her sister like she was nuts. "Like this!" Melissa grabbed the line and the fish, took the hook out of the fishs mouth and threw the fish in their pail. Jacy didnt want to have anything to do with touching a fish and Melissa gave her a wretched frown. Boy, if Jimmy saw Jacy now, he would laugh his head off. At the same time Melissa is thinking this, Jacy is thinking the same thing about the blond-haired guy. "Im just not any good at this." In a softer tone Jacy whispered, "I guess I just wont be his type." "Dont give up, Jacy. You can do it." Melissa was determined to make her sister a fisherman or fisher woman, whatever you call it. They fished a few more hours but Jacy wasnt any better. Whenever she tried to touch the fish she would make a god-awful face and after a minute she would back up and refuse to get near it. Melissa decided to call it quits for the day. "We will try again. Youll do better next time." They went home with four fish and Melissa cleaned and cut them up, and Jacy cooked them. Melissa sat at the table watching Jacy cook, and she thought, well, Jacy cant fish, but she sure can cook them. Melissa loves Jacys cooking. Jacy is a superb cook. Melissa hates to cook although she tries sometimes, but she knows she will never be as good as Jacy. Many times Jacy had told Melissa that it would just take some time before she mastering cooking as well as her, but Melissa knew better, she was a terrible cook. Melissa thought, Jacy will probably learn to be a great fisherman quicker than Ill learn to cook as well as her. |

went over to Jasmines Boutique to ask her for an interview. Jasmine was a sweet lady
and Jacy liked her very much. Though Jacy was sixteen and had taken on the role of mother
and sister for Melissa, sometimes Jacy wished she had her mother to talk to about things.
She didnt want to be the adult yet, but it fate had thrust it upon her. She had
wanted boys to ask her on dates and not have the responsibility of running a business and
looking after her sister at least for a couple more years, but that wasnt to be. "Good morning, Mrs. McGregor." Jacy said as she entered the store. "Please call me Jasmine, Miss Hagan." She replied. "Only if you call me Jacy." They both smiled. "What can I do for you, Miss Jacy? Theres nothing wrong with your dress, I hope." "Oh, No! Its fine. I came by to see if it would be alright if I interviewed you." "Why that would be fine with me. What would you like to know?" "Ive seen a lot of people coming into your store. Is that regular business mostly or are you having more business than usual due to the dance coming up?" "Well, actually the store is getting a little more business than usual because of the dance, but I am sure once people come through the town and as the town gets bigger it will always be busy." "After the dance your business will probably taper off a bit. How do you
cope with slow days?" "I don't like being a dressmaker, I love it! It fascinates me to come up with all
these designs that are created by me and to also know that I made them. It's a dream of
mine that is just now coming true and I am enjoying it very much." "I would have to say that my favorite part about being a dressmaker is that I can
come up with the designs and hopefully make the customers "dream dresses,"
thats what I call them." "The least favorite part would be when I don't have the material for a dress that
someone is looking for, or if I mess up and there are too many requests at one time." "I hope so, I believe that my rates are fair and so far no one has
complained." "Your welcome Jacy, it was fun. I am sure Gavin wouldn't mind if you went to the
ranch and did an interview. I am sure he would appreciate it just as much as I did." |
