MAY 21, 1861
Jennifer walked around town scribbling things in her notebook. She wondered who could give her some juicy information to start her book about. She looked at the jailhouse. She looked at the boutique shop. She studied the bordello establishment. Obviously the most action would be there and also at the saloon. But would the proprietors of those establishments talk to her. Just as she was about to walk over to the Silver Spoon to have a bite to eat, she heard hoofbeats. She turned to see a rider come galloping in. He jumped off his horse and went into the store. Maybe he had some sort of news that would be of interest for her. He had sure been in a hurry.
She went over to the store and was about ready to enter when the man came zooming out. He saw Jennifer but not quite in time. He put up his hands and halted but his hands were on her shoulders that pressed into her and made her back up a little. Startled by the abruptness of the man's approach, she yelped.
"Ma'am, I'm so sorry. I'm in a hurry. We're short riders, and I have another run soon. And I want to get a little rest and something to eat before I go on another run. Are you all right? You're not hurt are you?"
"No, I was just surprised." She smiled at the blondish-haired fellow. He would probably be a very handsome man, once he had a shave, a haircut and some clean clothes on.
"Are you sure you're not hurt?" He asked again.
"I'm sure, Mr.--"
"My friends just call me Kid, you can call me that, too." He smiled at her as he stepped back to get a better view of her. And besides he didn't want to crowd her.
She held out her hand and said, "I'm Jennifer. Please to meet you, Kid."
"Likewise ma'am." Kid shook her hand.
"What did you mean by run?" Her eyebrows went up. She was hoping that it might make a good story for her. If not, at least the rider intrigued her.
"Run, oh our Pony Express runs. I ride for the Pony Express. We deliver the mail. I was just delivering the Dreamville mail to the post office."
"You actually deliver the mail?" Jennifer hadn't heard of the Pony Express, but of course she had been traveling a lot.
"Yes ma'am."
"Please call me Jennifer or Jenny." She informed Kid. Kid nodded.
"Maybe when you have some free time, you could tell me more about the Pony Express." It was a good enough excuse to get to see him again. Besides it could make for an interesting story.
"Ma'a-- I mean Miss Jenny, I would like that. I have some free time tomorrow around suppertime. Would you like to grab a bite to eat and I'll tell you whatever you want to know."
"I would like that very much." I hope I get to learn more about him as well, Jenny thought.
"Well, Miss Jenny, I'll see you tomorrow at six." Kid tipped his hat and then moved on.
But as he mounted Katy, Jenny realized that she didn't know where she was suppose to meet him. "Kid!" Kid stopped his horse and turned in his saddle to look back at Jenny. "Kid where are we suppose to meet?"
Kid smiled. "I'll meet you over at the Silver Spoon," he pointed in the restaurant's direction, "the restaurant." Jenny nodded, and Kid rode back to the station.
Jenny went inside the store and talked with Simon about the mail, Kid and the Pony Express. Before she left, Simon had hired her as the post office clerk. She knew it was only temporarily, just until the regular clerk returned, but that was all right with her because she really didn't know how long she would be staying in town.
