OCTOBER 12, 1861

“I’m stumped as to what to get Caly and Buck for their wedding.” Jennie told Marta.

“Well, Devany and I got them some blankets, Desiree is giving them a song, and Ted is giving them some credit at the store.” Marta informed her.

“Hmmm,” was all that Jennie could say. She still didn’t know what to get them.

“Well, if I think of anything, Jennie, I’ll let you know.” Marta returned to the kitchen.

Jennie drank some of her milk and then continued to work on an article for the PEG, but her mind kept drifting off to Caly and Buck’s wedding. What would be really nice to give them?

“You’re not doing much writing. Is there a problem?” Walter sat down across from her.

“I don’t know what to get Caly and Buck for their wedding, and it seems to be controlling my thoughts more than this article.” She gently bit her lip. It was a habit of hers when she couldn’t figure out something.

“Well, I’ve decided to give them money. All new couples starting out can use money. I wish I could help you, but I’m sure you’ll think of something.” Walter smiled at her and then got up and went back to his office.

Outside Devany was being dropped off in front of the hotel. “Thanks Ted,” she called as Ted started Visions on down the road towards the saloon. Ted turned his head and nodded.

“Hi Jennie,” Devany greeted as she set her books down at Jennie’s table.

“How was school today?” Jennie asked.

“It was great. I played jump rope with some of the girls, and the teacher said I’m doing good.”

“That’s good.”

“Whatcha writin’?”

“Nothin’ much. I can’t seem to write cause I can’t decide what to get Caly and Buck for their wedding present.”

“We, Marta and I got them blankets, and Melissa told me today that they’re getting them some horses, two of them. Well, I have to go do my homework before supper. I hope you decide what to get them.” Devany grabbed her books and went into the kitchen to retrieve their room key from Marta, so that she could get started on her homework.

Horses! Blankets, “That’s it,” Jennie exclaimed as she decided what to get them for a wedding present. She snatched her writing materials into her arms and headed for the mercantile.
