APRIL 16, 1861
For the last two weeks men had been constructing a building at the East end of town near the boarding house. The men would work in the day, and then spend the night in their camp. They never did visit any of the establishments, not even the saloon. Caller Bob had thought it odd until he had found out the reason why. They had been offered a bonus if they worked and didn't seek out any entertainment while employed. The building that had been finished yesterday would be the first Dreamville Train Station.
Caller Bob was excited about getting the railroad. He thought it would be beneficial for everybody in Dreamville. In order to celebrate the train arriving in town, there would be a Dreamville Ceremony! At the end of last week several of the men from the railroad crew had built a stage down by the bank. Today a couple of those men were hanging a big banner from the roof of the PEG office to the roof of the bordello. The sign read, 'Welcome J & J Railroad'.
"You're still not going to clue me in as to who the owner of this railroad is?" Teaspoon asked Caller Bob.
"Sorry Teaspoon, I was sworn to secrecy. Besides you'll find out shortly."
A big husky man took to the stage about a quarter to noon, and he began to speak. "Ladies, gentlemen, please gather around." He motioned for the people out on the street to come closer. Of course the whole town was a buzz with the new addition of the train station and the big ceremony that was to take place today. There were a lot of people out in the street and on the boardwalk talking about it and wondering when the train was going to arrive, so when the man called and motioned for them to come close to the stage, they obeyed.
After he had gathered a small crowd and still some people were walking over to join them, the man began to speak again. His voice was loud so that it could carry at least half way down the street, so that everybody could hear him. "Please give me your attention." The crowd quieted down, and he continued, "The owner of the J & J Railroad will be arriving shortly. He would like to make a brief speech and then there will be a celebration for the addition of the new railroad added to your wonderful town." As if on cue a stagecoach came around the corner of the bank, passed it, and stopped next to the stage.
This stagecoach was a private one, owned by the proprietor of the railroad. The curtains were drawn, so nobody could see inside. The driver kept the stagecoach in top-notch condition for his employer. It was painted red with the words JT Stage across the doors. The interior was cushioned all in red because the owner would only ride in comfort. As he stepped out no one could see him because he exit on the left side, close to the bank, and the crowd was on the other side.
He walked up on the stage, and the crowd gasped as they saw who the owner of the J & J Railroad belonged to. "Good morning, Ladies, Gentleman. I'm glad you're all here. I hope that you all are as thrilled to have a railroad station in Dreamville, as I am." He cleared his throat and smiled at the crowd. Some of the people had smiles on their faces and others looked astonished that he was the owner of the railroad.
"Until the invention of the locomotive, all trips over land had to be made by foot, horseback, stagecoach, or wagon. These trips took weeks or even months, and many people died because of hunger or exhaustion. My train will change all that. Trips will take days, longer trips will take weeks but not months. Before you know it, you will be at your destination. Its the quickest land transportation there is today, and my train will promote prosperity and growth to Dreamville. I guarantee that there will be an enormous amount of profit for everyone here within a year's time." He paused to watch their reactions. Most of them seemed to believe his words. Then he smiled as he heard his pride and joy not to far off from his new home.
The citizens of Dreamville began to hear the steady choo-choo-choo as the train came closer to town. As it rolled into the station, the whistle blasted, the bell clanged, and they saw smoke and steam rise into the air.
For most it was the first time they had ever seen a train, so they were bewildered of it's hugeness. The crowd oohed and awed over it. After the crowd returned their attention to the speaker, he spoke to them some more. "There will be tours of my 'magnificent machine', and a big celebration." As he spoke his train crew brought out tables into the town street.
The foreman of the train crew had already paid the hotel owner and restaurant owner to supply food for the entire occasion. So Marta, Desiree, and Ted hurried to the hotel to bring out food. Elena and Charlie also went to bring out some food from the Silver Spoon.
"All drinks and food are on me, so enjoy. Oh, and by the way, I'm Jedidiah Tally Hunnewell, the duo owner of the J & J Railroad. If you would like a tour, please see the men over by the train." Tally left the stage. He had seen Samantha in the crowd, and he wanted to go and talk to her.
Walter went to grab his banjo, and some of the other men grabbed some instruments and they began to play. People started dancing, and some went over by the train. They wanted to see the inside of this 'magnificent machine'.
Before Tally could get to Samantha's side, Jacy stopped him. "Can we talk about the train. It would make a great story for my readers, and also help promote the railroad."
"Sure we can do that. But how about we do it later? Wouldn't you like a little ride in the train? We could discuss it while taking a little a ride, but right now don't you want to enjoy the celebration?" Tally asked her.
"Alright, just don't forget that you promised to take me for a ride." She replied.
"I won't." Tally smiled and went to look for Samantha, but unfortunately, she wasn't easy to spot, and instead he ended up talking with a lot of other people about the railroad.
Later that afternoon he took Jacy to the train for a little ride and an evening meal. She was surprised when she saw the tasteful decoration of the coach car. She found out that only Tally and his company were allowed to ride in this part of the train. After a few minutes of admiring the car, they sat down to eat and talk about the train. Throughout the meal, she pumped him for information for her story. After that Tally decided to tell her another secret that he had been keeping. "Jacy there's something I need to tell you." He paused to make sure he had her attention.
She put down her fork and swallowed her apple pie. "Ok, what is it?"
He didn't know how to cushion the blow, so he just told her straight out. "I'm your brother."
Stunned, she wasn't sure what to say or do. She would have to think and talk the way she thought the real Jacy would react. "Ummm . . . uhhh . . . what?"
"I'm your brother. I know it's hard to believe, but when I was a baby I was kidnapped and taken away. I grew up in Boston. I thought the Hunnewell's were my real parents. But then when my mother died, I guess she wanted to clear her conscious because before she died, she sent me a letter telling me all about it. I am truly your brother--"
Before he could say anymore, she stood up and let him have it. "No, no way, you're lying. You can't be my brother. You can't. My ma and pa would have told me about you. They would have. You're lying. I don't know why, but you're lying." She ran out of the train, and Tally almost followed her but decided she needed some time alone to let it sink in.
