APRIL 16, 1860
Javier saw Melissa sitting outside of the PEG office. He had been meaning to apologize to her, but he hadn’t seen her since the day they went fishing.
"Hi, Melissa." Melissa said nothing, "I, uh, wanted to explain why I did what I did." Melissa turned her back to him and pretended to be reading her chapter of The Three Musketeers for homework and tried not to smile. She really wasn’t mad at Javier anymore. Rose had gotten the whole story from Jesse and Michael, and she knew why Jesse and Javier did what they did. However, she was going to make Javier say that he was sorry before letting him know that. After all he deserved it.
Javier was getting frustrated with the silent treatment and threw his hands up in the air and cried, "Fine! I guess I won’t tell you that Michael had nothing to do with it, and that Jesse and I know that you both like each other, and that we were just trying to get you two together."
"I know," Melissa said melancholy.
"You know?"
"Yeah, I know. I found out at school a couple days ago."
"So why are you still giving me the silent treatment?"
"Because you haven’t said that your sorry for playing that trick on me?"
Javier was flabbergasted. "Me? Say I’m sorry? What about you? You were using me to get Michael jealous and that’s not very nice. You really hurt my feelings. I thought you liked me."
Melissa hadn’t thought about Javier’s feelings. She thought that Javier knew that she liked him as a friend. "I do like you Javier. You’re my friend."
"Friends don’t use each other like that."
"I’m sorry, Javier."
"I’m sorry, too, Melissa. Still friends?"
"Yep," Melissa smiled and shook Javier’s extended hand. Javier left and then Melissa went inside.
