MARCH 31, 1860

Jasmine sat behind her counter sewing a new school dress for Rose. All the while thinking that business had slowed down considerably since the Valentine’s dance. Well, everyone was getting ready for the Easter picnic coming, and mostly the activities outside in the heat wouldn’t call for any elegant clothes. And though she had heard about the surprise engagement party that was being held at the Silver Spoon after the picnic, she was guessing that folks were just trying to watch how much money they spent at this time.

She had heard lots of folks talking about wedding presents for Luke and Meghan. Their wedding scheduled for May 12. Luke and Meghan sure make a beautiful couple. Of course maybe the towns folks were just waiting until it got closer to the occasion because there was a few more weeks to go before Easter.

Her thoughts soon drifted to her own wedding, and to her wonderful man, Gavin. Unaware that Jacy had entered the boutique, Jasmine continued to sew and be lost in her thoughts.

Jacy watched as Jasmine continued to sew and hadn’t noticed her yet. Jacy didn’t want to disturb her. She wasn’t even sure why she was here. Jacy had thought about not going to the engagement party. Why should she go? She didn’t have a date.

Sometimes Jacy wished that they had never come to Dreamville. She loved and hated her job at the same time. She loved writing, but she was shy when it came to people, especially ones she barely knew. But this job had pushed her to make new acquaintances. If she knew for sure that her grandpa was dead, she might even consider selling the business.

It had taken all the nerve she could muster just to walk into the saloon to interview the owner, or half owner. And to top it off she hated saloons, or at least stepping into one. She hated talking to people especially those she didn’t know very well. That’s why she didn’t feel right interrupting Jasmine as she was working. So Jacy looked around the shop in search of a pretty dress for the party.

Melissa had been the one to convince her to go using the old stand by persuasion, ‘if you don’t go Jacy, it will look strange. You are the newspaper owner, reporter.’ So once again Jacy was going to another party without a date.

Jasmine stopped thinking about her own wedding to look up and around the shop, and that’s when she noticed Jacy. She got up, put Rose’s dress on her chair and walked over to Jacy, who was admiring some material that Jasmine had just purchased. "Hello, Miss Jacy."

A little startled Jacy turned around and smiled as she said, "Hello, I was just looking for a dress, and I saw this lovely material."

"It is beautiful isn’t it?" Jasmine replied, and Jacy nodded as she fingered the material.

"Could you make me a dress out of it and have it ready by Easter." Jacy asked.

Jasmine nodded. "I’m sure I could. I already have your measurements from last time, and as soon as I get it done, I’ll let you know."

"Thanks." Jacy looked down at the pretty material again.

"You’re welcome." Jasmine said. And as Jacy left, Jasmine thought what a pretty and very nice young girl. Some lad will be very lucky when he settles down with her. She picked up the pink print with blossoms on it and as she went back to her counter to begin work on the party dress, she thought hopefully this lovely dress will spark someone’s eye.
