INTRODUCING JAKE! |
| Jake Fresno rode into Dreamville late in the
afternoon, just as the sun was setting. It cast an orange glow on all the surrounding
buildings, and he watched people walk to and fro. It seemed like a quaint little place . .
. one that he would like to settle into for a while. It wasn't very loud like the last few
towns had been. He almost laughed aloud when he thought of the reason he'd left the last one . . . he'd been fired from his job as an English professor . . . but it had been worth it! Being fired hadn't bothered him in the least . . . what irritated him was the fact that the young woman couldn't keep her mouth shut. She had squealed to her friends and . . . well, the rest is history. Directly, he saw one of the most beautiful creatures God had ever made walking right down the walk, and she didn't even seem to notice him! He turned his horse in her direction and came to a halt. Dismounting, he quickly caught up to her and gently tapped her shoulder. When she turned around, he flashed his winning smile and watched the corners of her mouth turn up into a half-smile. "Good day, Miss," he said, his voice charming and smooth. Jake reached for her hand, kissed it and bowed slightly, smiling all the while. "I don't think we've met . . . I'm Jake Fresno from Boston and you are?" Taken aback by this gentleman's extreme good looks and wonderful manners, all she could say was, "Melissa. Pleased to meet you, Mr. Fresno." He smiled again in a full attempt to win her over completely. "Ah . . . Melissa . . . that would be the name the angels have spoken in my dreams," he whispered, watching her eyes light up . . . she was trying to hide her infatuation, but it wasn't working very well, "Ma'am, if I may be so bold as to trouble you with a certain request?" All Melissa could do was nod. Where had this man come from? "I am new here in Dreamville and would like to find a suitable room that I could call home once in a while . . . would you be so kind as to point me in the direction of the nearest hotel?" Melissa fought for words . . . this Jake Fresno . . . he was almost too much! "Well, I can do better than that, Mr. Fresno," she replied, returning his smile, "I've nothing better to do at the moment. Why don't I walk you over?" "Ma'am . . . you are a lifesaver, and I am completely in your debt," he said as he offered his arm to her, flashing that smile again as she accepted, "To what do I owe this gracious kindness? Perhaps a meal, later this evening? My treat." She thought about taking him up on the offer and then realized that they'd just met! She couldn't do that . . . not yet anyway. Good grief, he was a charming one! "Well, Mr. Fresno, there's no need," she answered, turning them in the direction of the hotel, "Besides, I have to be someplace else this evening." Jake nodded and patted her hand. He looked her directly in the eye and admired how beautiful she was. "Another time, then? Would Saturday evening suit you? I know no one else, and I truly detest dining alone . . . would you mind accompanying me then?" All she could do was nod and smile . . . thinking she'd really gotten in over her head this time. This one was going to be hard to lose and Melissa didn't quite know if she wanted to shake him off so quickly. Maybe . . . maybe he deserved a chance. After all, he seemed harmless enough. "Then I shall meet you at the restaurant . . . say seven o'clock?" He watched her nod yet again and smiled . . . he'd won! They reached the steps and he bowed once again to her and tipped his hat, "Til then, Melissa. I am looking forward to sharing my meal with such a fine, beautiful, young lady such as yourself." As Jake went inside, Melissa continued to stand there as if she was rooted to the spot . . . what on earth had possessed her to say yes? She didn't even know this man and here she was having dinner with him! What had gotten into her? She had to get a hold of herself! Well . . . dinner couldn't hurt anything, could it? It was just a friendly meal, and she was only doing it because he was new in Dreamville. He didn't know anyone else, and she couldn't just leave him to fend for himself. Besides . . . he intrigued her . . . and she wanted to find out why. |
