MAY 25, 1861
Jake was feeling better and it had been two weeks since the accident. He could hobble around without the crutches now, and he had heard from the town sheriff that all the outlaws had been caught. He was also relieved to hear that Melissa was fine.
As Jake rode into Dreamville, he was taken by surprise when he saw the young lady heading into the newspaper office. He knew her. This was odd that she would be here in this town of all places. He was going to head over and confront her, but at the moment, he saw Melissa coming out of the jailhouse. Melissa was his first priority. He wanted to see her first. He put a smile on his face and started for his angel, but before he got to the jail he stopped his horse. His expression went from happiness to hurt.
Melissa was going over to the newspaper to see if she could give Jacy a hand. From the jailhouse window, she had seen her sister come riding in. They were starting to get along better, and Melissa was happy about that. As she walked out onto the boardwalk intending to head across the street to go to the PEG building, she saw Jake riding into town. OH NO, she thought. He's the last person I want to see. She knew he had already seen her, but she quickly darted back into the jailhouse anyway. She peered out the window and saw that he was still coming. Now what would she do?
"Is something wrong, Melissa?" Teaspoon inquired as he looked up from the wanted posters that he had been flipping through.
"Um . . . um . . . Teaspoon, it's Jake. He's back." She replied as she watched him hitch his horse to the post outside. "I don't want to see him, Teaspoon. What can I do?" She went over to his desk.
"Go on out the back door. I'll stall him."
"Thanks Teaspoon. Thank you!" Melissa exclaimed and kissed him on the cheek. She then darted for the back door, and just as she was shutting it, Jake was knocking on the front door.
Teaspoon opened it up. "Well Jake, I thought you were long gone. What brings you back here?"
Jake tried to see inside, but Teaspoon blocked most of his view. "I saw Melissa come in here. Can I see her?"
Teaspoon shook his head. "Nope!" He tugged on his suspenders waiting for Jake to say something else.
"No? Why?"
"Come on in, Jake." Teaspoon stepped aside, and Jake walked on in. "As you can see, Melissa's not here. That's why you can't talk to her."
Jake studied the jailhouse. "Where did she go?"
"I don't know." Teaspoon really didn't know where she had gone.
"Alright, thanks anyway sheriff." Jake turned and started to walk out.
"Jake!" Jake stopped and turned around. "I think it's time you left town and didn't come back." Teaspoon's niece had been hurt, and he felt awful bad about that. By golly he wasn't going to let anything happened to Melissa, too. She was like a granddaughter to him.
Jake didn't respond. He wasn't going to waste words on the sheriff. He wanted -- no needed to talk to Melissa. He wasn't sure where to look for her at, and since he wasn't sure, he decided to see his old friend and find out why she was here in town. He went over and stood in front of the PEG building. He peered inside and saw her, so instead of knocking, he just walked right in.
"Well, well if it isn't Jewel."
"OH MY GOD," She whispered. She slowly turned around to see Jake. She just starred at him and didn't say a word. Abruptly she came to her senses. She was suppose to be playing the role of Jacy, not Jewel. She couldn't let on that she knew him. She shook her head to recover. "Who are you? What are you doing in here? Don't you knock before entering? Don't you have any manners?" She hollered at him to mask her surprise at seeing him.
"What do you mean? Who am I? Oh come on Jewel, you know me. Don't you remember the night we were on the--"
"I don't know what youre talking about. My name is Jacy, not Jewel. Now if you don't leave, I'll call the sheriff." Her eyes gleamed as she squinted at him. Determined to show him that she meant business, she put her hands on her hips.
Jake just knew it had to be her. He walked towards her, and she started backing up, but her anger didn't subside. Her buttocks hit the back of her desk, and there was nowhere else that she could retreat to. "Get out! Get out, or I'll scream!" She warned him.
As Jake put his arms around her, Melissa stormed in. "JAKE!" She screamed as she saw him mauling her sister.
Jake spun around and held up his hands in surrender. "Melissa, it's not what you think."
"OH, IT'S NOT!" She shook her head. "I was stupid. I should have listened to my sister in the first place. I should have seen with my own two eyes how horrible you are. Get out! GET OUT! I never want to see you again." Red faced with her hands balled up into fists she was ready to attack. Jake saw that there was no reasoning with her, not when she was like this, so he kept his distance from her and walked out. He dropped his hands when he got in the doorway. He thought about saying something, but he wasn't sure what to say. Melissa gave him one last angry look, and then she turned and went to her sister. "Are you alright? Did he hurt you, sis?" Jacy shook her head and then put her arm around Melissa. Jake guided his horse down the street where he left him at the livery stable and then took a room at the hotel.
