AT THE VALENTINE'S DANCE!

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

Jacy had wandered into the corral, but had stayed near the fence and stopped in the far right hand corner, hoping to be inconspicuous so that she could watch the dancers when the music started without anyone staring at her. She knew it was no sense in her sticking around for she didnt have a date, no would be asking her to dance either because she barely even knew anybody in town. But she wanted to stay for at least a few minutes just to watch the others have some fun.

Before she knew it Melissa had joined her, and then someone by the name of CJ joined them. He seemed to be a real charmer. He strolled out on the dance floor with her sister. When they returned he asked Jacy if she would like to dance. Jacy didnt want to be rude, so she went on the dance floor with him.

Jacy and CJ returned to Melissa and Jimmy. While Jimmy, Melissa and CJ got into a little discussion about the festivities, Jacy moved off a few feet to be by herself, and she closed her eyes and imagined him walking up to her and asking her to dance. It wasnt as good as the real thing, but it was nice to daydream sometimes, though she found herself doing it a lot lately.

She had been hoping that Cody would approach her and apologize. She knew she needed to apologize for storming off like she had, but she wanted him to apologize first. If only she could have been his date for the dance tonight.

All of a sudden there was a loud snapping sound in front of her face, and Jacy quickly opened her eyes to see no other than CJ. While pulling Jimmy out on the dance floor to square dance, Melissa hollers over her shoulder at CJ and Jacy for them to come on and dance, too.

CJ asks Jacy to dance, but she declines, but CJ is a persistent fellow and wont take no for an answer, so he pulls her out on the dance floor. About ready to pull back Jacy notices Cody talking with a pretty gal. Angry Jacy gives in and lets CJ lead the way. After dancing with him for a while, they finally decide to take a break.

CJ tried to give her a bracelet, but Jacy handed it right back to him. She just doesnt know what CJ is up to. Theyre lots of other pretty girls here tonight, and it looks like a few of them dont have dates, so why did he zero in on her. Not that she was complaining, she was just curious. Maybe he was just trying to be nice to the new girl in town, but giving her a present such as that bracelet was just to way out of line. Neither one of them knows each another. They had just met.

Before Jacy knows it hes shoving the bracelet back into her hands and taking off. Stunned Jacy just stood there for a few minutes. The fella just gives me a bracelet and then takes off. Whats up with that? After collecting her thoughts, Jacy went looking for CJ to give him the bracelet back. She searched and searched, but she never saw him again that night.
