DECEMBER 1, 1860
It was getting close to Christmas and Walter hadn't decided what to buy Desiree yet, so he was looking around the store when he came across some necklaces with different letters of the alphabet on them. There just happened to be one with a 'D' on it, so Walter decided to get it.
As he was purchasing the necklace Jacy came in. He smiled and asked her if she thought Desiree would like it. She nodded and said, "It's very pretty. I'm sure she will like it." Walter was happy to have another opinion that was the same as his. He thanked Simon and left. After purchasing it he took it home to wrap it.
She slipped over to admire the necklaces with the letters on them. She decided to buy one. The letter 'C' was the one she purchased. After seeing the necklace that Walter had bought she had thought of a plan. Well, sort of a plan, she hadn't thought it all the way through yet, but she was sure something would come to her.
Cody entered the store. He had just got back from a run and after getting cleaned up, he had come to town to see his girl. Before heading over to the PEG though he had decided to stop in at the store to see what he could buy Jacy for Christmas. But he hadn't known that Jacy was there until he stepped inside.
Jacy was about to walk out of the store when she saw Cody entering. She immediately pocketed the necklace. Cody strolled up to her and they exchanged greetings.
"Jacy would you like to have lunch with me?" Cody inquired.
"I would like that." That way she could watch Charity some more.
The store started filling up with people. Some were there to pick up supplies, others to look for Christmas presents.
"I need to pick up a few things for Rachel, but after I'm done, I'll come by and pick ya up for lunch. How does that sound?" Cody starred intently at Jacy. He wanted to memorize every aspect of her. He just couldn't get enough of seeing her.
"That sounds fine. I'll see ya later." Jacy went outside and peered through the window. Would he see the necklaces? Would he buy one for her for Christmas? She watched as he toured the store and when people came out, she would look as though she was searching for something in her purse. She would look up and smile at them and then watch as they left. Then she would turn back and look inside. Alright! She almost jumped out of her skin. She was so excited. He was looking at the necklaces. Mentally she screamed buy one, BUY One, BUY ONE! She watched as he picked up the 'J' necklace. She jerked her arm down and mentally said ALRIGHT! Unbeknownst to her she had a spectator watching her, actually she had two spectators; one being Elena and the other being Tally. Elena was watching her and Cody from inside the store, and Tally was watching from the bordello window.
Tally thought that's strange. I've never seen Jacy do that with her arm before, but then again I haven't been around Jacy a whole lot, so maybe she does do that. He wondered why she was watching through the store window. Curious he wondered if he should just walk over and ask her. Too late Cody was coming out of the store. That must be why she was watching through the window.
As Cody came out the door, she was fingering the 'C' necklace in her pocket. Startled that Cody was coming out already she walked toward him, but her feet being somewhat clumsy tripped her up and she stumbled into Cody. Cody wasn't expecting someone to knock into him, so he lost his balance, and him and Jacy both went tumbling to the boardwalk. Elena saw the whole incident and almost giggled but stifled herself when she saw the necklace in front of her that Jacy had dropped. She knew that Cody had bought a necklace with a 'J' on it for Jacy, but this necklace had a 'C' on it.
"OWWWW!" She let out a bloodcurdling howl.
"What? What's wrong Jacy?" Worried Cody forgot about the present that he had been carrying and that had fallen out of his hands when Jacy had collided with him.
"Owww!" She said again but this time it wasn't a horrible yowl. "My hand hurts." She looked at her palm.
"It's a splinter." Cody stated as he saw it sticking out of her palm. "Here let me get it out." Cody slid closer to Jacy and bowed his head next to hers. He took her right hand in his left hand to hold hers steady. Then he proceeded to grab the splinter. While this was taking place, Elena looked around the store. Everybody had left, and Simon wasn't anywhere to be seen. She grabbed the necklace with the 'C' on it and the box that had the 'J' necklace in it. She switched the necklaces and pocketed the 'J' necklace. She then sat the box back where it had fallen.
"Owww!" She said more loudly than the last time, and she jerked her hand away.
"I'm sorry, Jacy, it's going to hurt right when I pull it out, but it will be ok afterwards." Cody tried to comfort her and he kissed her check. She nodded her head and handed her hand back to him. Cody pulled it out and jokingly asked, "Do you want to keep it as a souvenir for bumping into me?" She shook her head and stood up. She felt into her skirt pocket and was stunned to find the necklace missing. She started scanning the boardwalk for it trying not to be too obvious while Cody stood up and retrieved his Christmas present for Jacy. He quickly pocketed it and hoped that Jacy wouldn't ask him about it. "Is something wrong Jacy?" He noticed her looking and walking around the boardwalk.
"Excuse me, you can't keep blocking the door all day." Elena said as she pushed by Cody and headed for the bordello. As she walked across the street she noticed Tally looking out the window. She hoped he hadn't seen what she had done. She was relieved when Tally didn't say anything to her as she walked into the bordello. Obviously he hadn't seen what she had done. Otherwise he would have said something. She knew he liked Jacy. She didn't know how much he liked her, but she did know that they were good friends ever since he had helped her build her ranch.
"Jacy is something wrong?" Cody asked again.
"No, I was just wondering where that splinter came from." Jacy stated as her eyes roamed the boardwalk one last time.
"Oh, it could have came from anywhere. Come on let's go get some lunch. Ok?" Cody held out his arm and she reluctantly took it.
Where could it be? She tried to glance back over her shoulder for one last look but it was no use. It was gone. Her plan went up in smoke all due to a stupid splinter and her clumsy feet.
