APRIL 16, 1860
Rose had just finished her chores, and now she was walking behind her dad as he led the horse that he had just broke into the barn. "Dad hows business?"
"Not so good, honey. I havent sold a horse in a couple of months."
"Well, maybe you should see if the Pony Express needs some horses." Rose suggested.
"Ive been thinking about doing that, and I just might ride into town tomorrow and speak with Teaspoon." Gavin put the horse in a stall, and then him and Rose went into the house for supper.
The next morning after Rose went to school, Gavin saddled Midnight and went to the see the sheriff, who is also the stationmaster for the Pony Express. "Good morning, sheriff."
"Good morning, Gavin. What brings you into town?" Teaspoon sat up straighter in his chair to seem more professional like.
"I was wondering if the station needed any horses? I have a few good ones for sale." Gavin took a seat while Teaspoon rubbed his chin.
"Well, I think we could use two more horses. Usually the lads will round up some mustangs and break them, but weve been really busy lately, and Ive lost a few good riders over the last few months."
"Lost!"
"Well, one left, and I had to send one over to Broken Bow because they are short some riders." Teaspoon explained. "Ill send a couple of riders over this afternoon to have a look at your stock."
"Great, thanks sheriff. Well, I better get back to the ranch, lots to do."
"Goodbye, Gavin."
Gavin turned to wave and as he started back out the doorway, he ran into a pretty young lady, who backed up with a scowl on her face. "Im sorry Miss . . . Miss . . ."
"Jacy!" She hotly retorted. "You should watch where youre going.
"I know. I should have, sorry." Gavin replied.
Teaspoon came over to the doorway. "I see youve met our excellent reporter." After hearing Teaspoons compliment, Jacys anger subsided. "You know Gavin you might want to run an ad or article in the paper about your horse ranch."
"You have a horse ranch?" Jacy asked.
"Yes, I do. Why are you interested in a horse?" Gavin hoped as he asked the question.
"Ive been looking for one. Do you live nearby?" She inquired.
"Not too far. If youre not busy we could ride out and take a look right now." Gavin suggested.
Jacy was very interested in acquiring a horse, but she didnt know this man. "Well . . . uhm . . . I dont even know you."
"Im sorry. I should properly introduce myself. Im Gavin McGregor." He held out his hand and Jacy slowly raised hers and shook his hand. His name sounded familiar, at least his last name did.
Teaspoon understood that Jacy was weary of strangers. "Hes a nice fella, Jacy. His wife is Jasmine, the boutique owner."
"Oh. I know her. Yes, I would like to look at your horses."
"Can you go now?"
"Yes, I can. Oh wait, no I cant. Melissa is in school, and she rode Braids today. I dont have a horse to ride." Disappointment spread over Jacys face as she replied.
"My wife, Jasmine rode her horse into town today. Lets go see if she will let you borrow her horse." Gavin said as he held out his arm to escort Jacy down the boardwalk. Jacy smiled and let him lead her down to the shop.
After Gavin spoke with Jasmine for a few minutes, Gavin mounted Midnight and Jacy rode Jasmines horse, Lady Jewel, out to the ranch. Jacy looked over the stock thoroughly, and she saw a couple that she might like, but none of them really struck her fancy. She told Gavin that she would think about it, and he told her to take her time. He also told her that he would probably have a few more in a few weeks. She nodded and agreed to check back with him. She rode back to town, tied Lady Jewel to the post outside of the boutique and informed Jasmine that she had done so.
