OCTOBER 3, 1860

Elena reread the ad and smiled. She was going to be in his house, and his wife would be playing hostess, so she'd be too busy to keep an eye on Luke. She swung her bedroom door open and squealed loudly. When Vanessa poked her head out to find out what was wrong, Elena took the opportunity to launch herself into her room.

"Can you believe it?" Elena asked as she threw herself across her friend's bed.

Vanessa arched an eyebrow in question. "I don't have any idea what you're talking about."

"This." She held out a copy of the PEG, and Vanessa quickly scanned the ads.

"What am I looking for?"

"The party." Elena sat up quickly and pointed to the ad. "Luke is having a party at his house for Halloween."

"It says Luke and Meghan are having a party." Vanessa corrected.

"Whatever. Do you think Anjanette would let us go?"

Vanessa shrugged. I don't see why not. I've heard some people around town talking about it. We might be really slow that night." She looked down at Elena and saw the gleam in her eyes. "Why? What are you planning?"

"Nothing . . . Well, not nothing exactly. I'm trying to think about what I'll need for my costume." She bit her lip in thought. "I'll need to order a wig and get a dress fixed up."

Vanessa's brow furrowed. "What are you planning on going as?"

Elena's smiled broadened. "The one thing Luke can't resist . . . I'm gonna be Meghan."

The other girl's mouth dropped open. "Oh Elena, I don't think you should do that."

"You wouldn't." She muttered. "I'll be kind, Nessa dear, I promise."

"Elena, why don't you just leave that woman alone? She's never done anything to you, and she shouldn't have to worry about you in her condition."

"Who's friend are you, Nessa?" Elena asked, the hurt evident in her voice. "You were always so understanding before you left to work at that barbershop. I thought you were my friend."

Vanessa sighed. "I am your friend."

Elena's face brightened. "Great! Could I borrow one of your dresses? I don't think I have anything prim enough to pass as a Meg type dress."

The other woman rolled her eyes. "No Elena, you can't borrow one of my dresses cause I don't want you going as Meghan Saunders."

"Okay, so I'll go as Meghan Thompson." Elena said with a smile. "This way I won't have to pad my stomach." She frowned slightly. "But I will have to pad my bosom, that girl could've had a wonderful career working for Anjanette."

"Elena-"

"Fine, don't help me. I'll do it all alone." The young woman said as she turned to the door. "I'm going to that party Nessa, and I'm going as Meghan."

Vanessa watched silently as Elena flounced out of the room and then she raised her eyes heavenward and asked for the strength to deal with her friend.
