JULY 19, 1860
Elena walked into the Silver Spoon and could feel the stares of the patrons on her back. With her head held high she sat at one of the tables and began to read the PEG she had just purchased.
"Excuse me, you work at the brothel right?" A female voice asked.
Elena sighed loudly. "That's right." She answered without looking up at the woman. After a few moments when the person hadn't left her side, Elena glanced up. "Was there something else, or are you ready to take my order?"
"Well it seems your presence here makes some of our customers uncomfortable."
Elena smiled as she looked around. The looks she got went from disgusted to worried to interested. "It should. I happen to know half the men here quite intimately." She said as she waved to a man sitting with his wife.
The woman laughed when the wife hit the man's arm as he waved back to Elena. "I knew I would like you. My name is Charity. We've met briefly at Caller Bob's."
"Yes, I remember. You're in my square. I'm Elena."
"Glad to meet ya." Charity said. "I don't mean to shove you off but-" Charity nodded toward the kitchen door where Noah stood watching the two women anxiously. He had sent Charity out to get rid of Elena as soon as the young woman walked in the door.
"I completely understand." Elena said as she winked at the owner. "I'd hate it if your very attractive boss lost customers all because of little ole me. I'll take today's special to go if I can."
"No problem, one special coming up." Charity gave the order to a passing Clover. Smiling, she turned back to the younger woman. "I'm not one to gossip, but I've heard it said that you're infatuated with a certain married barber."
Elena shrugged. "It's possible. It's my job to be infatuated with all kinds of men, married or not."
Charity nodded. "I see. Well then you wouldn't be interested in any information I have regarding Luke Saunders and his wife." Charity turned to leave, but hadn't gotten two steps away from Elena when she was stopped by the other woman's voice.
"Wait. What do you know?"
Charity turned back to the saloon girl with a glint in her eyes. "Well like I said, I'm not one to gossip-"
Elena rolled her eyes. "I know your kind. You're not happy unless you're spreading gossip. So spill it."
"Okay." Charity said as she leaned in closely to Elena. "I happen to know that Luke Saunders will not be living with his wife for a while."
Elena's eyebrows rose and she smiled. "Really? Don't tell me there's trouble in paradise already."
"Oh no. They were in here a couple of days ago looking very happy and very much in love."
"Then why would he be leaving her?"
"You have heard about people switching jobs haven't you?" Elena nodded. She had briefly entertained the idea of writing an anonymous note switching herself and Luke's assistant but she was sure Corey would have flatly refused it.
Charity continued. "Well, I happen to know that Luke Saunders has been switched with Buck Cross."
"You don't say."
"Oh yes, and I'll bet you never heard the rumor that sweet Mrs. Saunders was quite taken with Mr. Cross just prior to her hasty marriage. As a matter of fact, I believe the rumor was that Luke stole her away from Buck then married her before the rider could do anything about it."
Elena's mouth dropped open. "I had no idea."
Clover appeared then with Elena's meal. Charity chuckled and handed Elena her food. "Things will definitely get interesting very soon."
"Most definitely." Elena said as she paid for her meal and left with a big smile. She was already making plans to spend some time with Luke.
