JANUARY 17, 1861
Elena walked into the Silver Spoon and took a seat at a table in the back corner. She smiled at Clover as she took the menu from her and glanced down at it while she waited for her friend to join her for lunch. A few minutes later, Charity came out of the kitchen and sat at the table.
"Okay I have about a half hour before I have to get back to work. Charlie is in the kitchen so I can't say how good the food will be."
Elena laughed. "Charlie is a great cook."
"I guess." Charity agreed half-heartedly, in truth she liked the man. He was becoming more special to her everyday and he was slowly filling the void left by the death of her parents. "So are you going to the Valentine's Day dance?"
Elena arched an eyebrow. "Are you kidding? The town would be in an uproar if a whore showed up to sully one of their precious dances. Besides I'd hate to ruin the holiday for wives and girlfriends of the men in town. It's not nice to be reminded that I'm the one they go to for satisfaction in bed."
"You went to the Halloween party."
"Yes, but that was to get Meg's goat. Which I did." And a lover beside, she added silently and smiled at the thought of spending Valentine's with Ian. She would have to ask him when she saw him next.
"What is that about?" Charity asked.
"What?" Elena asked innocently.
"That smirk on your face. Do you have a beau Elena?"
The young woman rolled her eyes. "In my profession every man is my beau."
"Don't you try to change the subject. What are you keeping from me? Is Luke warming up to you?"
Elena laughed. "No, not yet." She paused then leaned in. "Okay, I'll tell you but you have to swear that this goes no further than this table. I will not have you ruining my chances."
Charity was intrigued and looked around before she too leaned in close. "You have my word as your friend."
"Okay. You know Ian right?"
"Yes, I went to the Turkey Trot with him remember?"
"He and I are partners in a scheme. It turns out that he has a thing for Mrs. Saunders."
Charity's mouth dropped open. "You're kidding! I knew there was something funny in the way he looked at her. So? Is there anything happening?"
Elena wasn't about to tell her about the relationship she shared with Ian, that was something she wanted to keep to herself for now. "I think he's making some progress."
"So that explains why you haven't been chasing after Luke. You've been letting Ian work on Meghan."
"Exactly. But I'm going to have to do something or else Luke might get suspicious."
"What are you planning?"
"I'm just going to be my old loveable self at the Square Dance Graduation."
Charity sighed. "I can't believe it's over."
"And are you any closer to Cody?"
"Nope. With Jacy here it's difficult."
Elena shrugged. "I think you should just take what you want. Go after Cody, the hell with Jacy."
"That's your style Elena, not mine." Charity said softly.
"So then it's safe to assume, you will not be going to the Valentine's Day Dance with Cody."
"Nope, I won't be going at all. Those things are for couples and I'm not part of one." It was as good an excuse as any. Charity wasn't sure why she didn't just tell Elena about the card someone had pushed under her door that morning. She supposed she was a little shy telling her friend that she had a secret admirer, and she supposed she didn't want to jinx herself. A small part of her wondered if maybe Cody had done it but she wasn't sure. The last bit of gossip she'd heard was that Cody and Jacy had had a falling out on Christmas, but if they loved each other than Charity was sure their anger didn't last very long. That left her to wonder all day who could have sent her the note. Only one way to find out, she thought. She'd just have to go to Fun Meadow on Valentine's night and meet her cupid then.
The two women talked about the latest gossip during lunch and soon after they were done Elena took herself back to the bordello. The mail was set up on the table by the door and Elena picked it up. As she headed toward Anjanette's office she began looking through the notes for anything of interest, suddenly she spied her name and paused. She tucked the note under her arm and with a smile for the Madam, gave her the rest of the mail and headed to her room quickly. She read the contents of the note as she laid on her bed and smiled. So, one of her clients had taken a liking to her, she thought happily. Elena sat up and wondered if she should meet this cupid, she had heard of prostitutes being raped and beaten by an over amorous and possessive client. Did she dare risk it?
Biting her lip as she thought and another idea crept into her mind. What if it was Ian who had sent her the note? Elena sighed heavily as she decided that she would go to the creek and hide in the darkness until she was sure of who she was supposed to meet. If it were Ian then she would start believing in dreams again. She never thought that she could give her heart to a man again but it was very easy to lose her heart with Luke's friend.
