JANUARY 17, 1860
The sun was shining on the sky and Eddie was very excited with all the discussions about the dance for Valentine's day. He was hoping to have the courage to ask a certain lady in town to go with him, but first Eddie wanted to learn to ride a horse.
Eddie' s first tentative when he arrived in Dreamville wasn't very good, to tell the truth Eddie knew he was the worst rider ever.
"Hey Bird, may I borrow your horse?" Asked an animated Eddie.
Bird looked at him suspicious, "Why do you want my horse, Eddie?"
"I want to practice Bird, please?"
"Ok, but don't take Thief or Red, they aren't the horse for you kid, go and take Fame there. She is a docile horse." Bird replied.
Eddie went to take Fame, and even though Fame was a nice and docile horse, Eddie fell right off after mounting, Bird laughed and walked towards Eddie to help him.
Eddie said he was fine and he tried to mount Fame again. Well, this time he got it right. Eddie rode about 3 miles from the town without falling, which was a victory.
While Eddie was distracted, another rider approached from behind. Fame got scared and Eddie fell from the horse. The rider stopped to help Eddie up.
"Are you ok, mister?" The rider asked offering his hand to Eddie.
Eddie knew the rider. "Oh, thanks. I'm fine Mr. Saunders," Luke recognized Eddie, too.
"Oh, hi Eddie, sorry." Luke said
"It wasn't your fault, Mr. Saunders, I'm a horrible rider," Eddie replied embarrassed.
"You need practice, Eddie, that's all," Luke said trying to stimulate Eddie.
Luke told Eddie to mount Fame again and to follow him. Eddie watched Luke riding and tried to imitate him. After almost an hour riding with Luke, Eddie didn't fall once.
Luke tried to distract Eddie talking about Australia and the adventures he wanted to find in the West. Eddie and Luke became friends cause they had the same interests about the wild life, the West and all the adventures they could find here.
"See Eddie, you are doing great," Luke said as they stopped at the hotel.
"Thanks, Mr. Saunders," Eddie answered smiling
"You did all the work Eddie, and please call me Luke" Luke replied
"Ok, Luke, thanks again" Eddie was pleased that he had done so well at his first attempt to ride.
"You're welcome Eddie, you just need to follow the tips I gave you." Luke replied.
Eddie nodded smiling.
"Bye Eddie," Luke said riding off in the barber's shop direction.
"Bye Luke" Eddie called after him.
Eddie had fun that day, he made a new friend and just fell from the horse twice. It was a wonderful day, which gave Eddie the courage he needed to ask Miss Leconte to the dance.
