JULY 14, 1860

Joshua woke up and was a little disoriented. Where was he? Then he remembered he was in Kid's bunk. They had switched jobs. He wondered who had them switch. It couldn't have been Drucilla. She wouldn't have done that. She wouldn't want to get rid of her best lumberjack and foreman.

After eating Rachel's good cooking, he walked outside. Some of the other riders had changed jobs, too. Simon was working here at the station for Cody, and they even have Caly here working for the lad Lee. Of course Caly had to dress like a lad, but Teaspoon knew it was really her. He wondered who had switched Lee and Caly. Could it have been Buck? He doubted it. Why would he want the girl that he likes to be a Pony Express rider? Besides he could see Caly more if she wasn't a rider.

Joshua chatted with Simon for a little bit. He found out that Simon didn't want to switch jobs at first, but now after a few days he enjoyed riding for the Pony Express. Simon didn't have a run until tonight, and Joshua had a run around noon. It was a short run though, and he would be back by supper time, so he decided to ride over and ask Drucilla to have supper with him in town.

Drucilla was out watching the lumber crew. She knew some of her men were giving Kid a hard time because he had never done this kind of work before. She knew that Kid would feel even worse and look bad in his co-workers eyes if Drucilla came to his aid. Kid would just have to work it out for himself.

Drucilla shielded her eyes from the hot blazing sun as she heard a rider approaching. It was Joshua. "Hello," she said as he stopped a couple of feet from her.

"Good morning." Joshua swung down out of the saddle. He looked at the crew and Kid. "How's he doing."

"Not very well, what are you doing here?" Drucilla asked.

"I was wondering if you would like to have supper with me this evening?" Joshua replied as he watched Kid jump out of the way of a falling tree.

"I would love to. Don't you have a run today?" Drucilla frowned as she saw Kid almost get hit. Maybe she should go and say something to her crew.

"Yes, I do, but it's short, and I'll be back by supper time." Joshua turned his face to study Drucilla's.

"Joshua do you have time to give Kid a few pointers before you leave?" Drucilla thought that it wouldn't be so bad if Joshua talked to Kid.

"Sure, I can do that." Joshua replied. He walked out to the crew and talked with Kid for a little while. "Kid don't let these men intimidate you. You're their boss. Tell them what you want them to do, and if they don't listen then tell them you'll report them to Drucilla. If you report them to her, she will probably fire them, and they know that." After giving Kid some instructions, he went over and talked with a few of the crew. Before leaving he said goodbye to Drucilla.

That evening Drucilla came riding over to the Pony Express station. She figured that it would be quicker for her to go there instead of Joshua coming to the lumber mill. While waiting for Joshua for about an hour, she talked with Rachel. She learned that all the new riders were doing very well, especially Joshua. Of course Drucilla had no doubt that Joshua would be good because he was a great rider. She did fret some about his welfare though because she was afraid he would get hurt by Indians or bandits.

Every minute that passed and he didn't come riding in, she was getting more worried. But as he did galloped in, she let out a sigh of relief. Joshua greeted the ladies and told Drucilla that he would get cleaned up, and then they could go to supper. He put his horse up and went to the bunkhouse. Rachel sent Jesse to hitch up the buckboard for Joshua and Drucilla. Joshua was famished, so he hurriedly changed clothes and washed up by the vase of water in the bunkhouse.

As Drucilla and Joshua ate at the Silver Spoon, Drucilla wondered who had switched Joshua and Kid. She had talked to Joshua a few days ago about paying his and Kid's fine to get them back where they belonged, but Joshua told her that Kid wouldn't like that at least not at this point. He would think that Drucilla didn't think he could do a good job. Joshua had told her. On Joshua's advice she didn't post the fine. But tonight at supper she volunteered to do it again. But he told her it still wasn't the right time. If Kid didn't get any better soon then in a few days she should do it, but she should give Kid a little more time. After a while of persuasion Drucilla agreed.

They both had a wonderful supper, and since Drucilla had tied her horse to the buckboard before they had left for town, Joshua drove Drucilla home. He kissed her lightly on the cheek and said goodnight.

That night Joshua fell asleep quickly and dreamed of his lovely lady. Drucilla also drifted off to dreamland with a lovely dream of her and Joshua.
