INTRODUCING DANIEL! |
|
| Daniel sat on the porch swing,
supposedly reading a medical journal, but watching the adulation shine from his
daughters eyes with a scowl. It wasnt that he didnt approve of the young
man that had won his daughters affections, but she was his baby, she was too young
to be thinking about leaving him for a husband. Besides she was all he had left of his
precious Elizabeth. She was the picture of her mother, it hurt a little bit every time he looked at his daughter, recalling memories of the love he had shared with Elizabeth, but Serena was helping him through that pain as only she could. He turned his head slightly to look at the beautiful young woman that had consented to be his wife. Her blonde hair twisted into a loose chignon at the base of her neck. She sat with a sketch pad and charcoal pieces trying to sketch the love of his daughters life and one of their friends. Her face was drawn into a mock scowl as she watched them clown about, but she couldnt help herself but be caught up in their infectious laughter. Luke Saunders, a long time friend of Serenas, had become almost like the big brother Meghan had never had. He didnt begrudge his daughter the friendship but he couldnt help but be resentful that his wife was so close to a man that was so obviously in love with her. Buck Cross, a young man that rode for the pony express was seated beside Luke, laughing at the things his new friend said. He had graciously consented for Serena to paint his portrait. She was doing a few preliminary sketches just to get the feel for her artwork again. Daniel wasnt a bit concerned that she would be spending her time painting, anything that took her mind away from working as a doctor or having babies was fine by him. Its not that he didnt want more children he could think of nothing that he wanted more than a tiny daughter the image of Serena but he wanted to keep her alive more. Just the thought of her dying bearing his child sent shivers down his spine. He knew he was expecting a lot from them both. Pulling them both from the society and surroundings they had loved two months ago, dragging them to the middle of the wild west to watch him build a new practice and a new life for them all. But he refused to have his wife and daughter part of a thankless and sometimes dirty profession that they both seemed to have chosen to spite his wishes and refused to give up their dreams. It didnt matter that he had met Serena as her teacher and watched with pride when she was awarded her diploma, he still didnt want her to work. He wanted her safe and well at home and away from any danger. Luke had helped him build his doctors establishment, and his home was attached to his practice. He had built up a nice relationship with most of the people in town. Now all he had to do was overcome his fear of losing either of his girls and his life in town would be happier than he could have ever imagined. |

INTRODUCING SERENA! |
|
| Serena was born in Sydney
Australia, to the lap of luxury, daughter of a prominent Judge and a genteel homemaker.
All she ever needed to do with her life was find a man she loved and settle down and raise
a family. That however, was not what Serena wanted to do with the life she had been given.
From her earliest memories all she ever wanted to do was help people, this often got her
in trouble with her parents when she spent too much time with the indentured servants when
they were ill. Serena studied hard at a prestigious school and soon, far surpassing the most intelligent of the boys in her class. Her family tried desperately to discourage her from book learning and spent more time learning how to make a home for the husband she would one day have, but her mind was thirsty for knowledge and would not be dissuaded. Encouraged by the results of her studies, she applied to all the medical schools in the country, however, she received the same reply from all of them. We are sorry they would write, unfortunately, we are unable to accept female students at this establishment. Disheartened, but undeterred, she sent copies after copies to other prominent medical schools in both England and the United States, knowing that if she was going to fulfil her lifelong dream she would have to leave her beloved family. After six months she had received no reply and almost gave up hope of ever becoming a doctor, but one day she received a letter from a prominent medical school in Boston, which stated that they were admitting academically suitable women on a trial basis and would be more then happy to take her registration. Happier than she had been in months she knew that her father would never give her permission to travel so far from home unchaperoned, so she confided in her only friend in the world, Luke Saunders, of her intentions. They were a mismatched pair, she a genteel young lady from Sydney social elite and he a slightly rough around the edges young shearer form the countries most prominent sheep station. He had saved her one day from a sudden downpour when she had been shopping in the streets of Sydney town and they had become fast and firm friends. They both shared their innermost dreams with the other. In fact, he was very displeased with her plans to run away to Boston on her own and decided then and there that he would travel with her and help her should she ever need it. So that very night she packed several bags of her books and belongings and crept out to meet Luke, sailing for the US on the tide that same evening. They became very close on the voyage, sharing their dreams and hopes of what their futures would hold. They traveled to the medical school and found lodging as brother and sister in a guesthouse. Then they settled down with Luke finding part time handyman work and Serena studying hard. During the course of her studies she fell desperately in love with Daniel Thomson, one of her teachers. They shared a whirlwind romance and were married two days after her studies were finished, so she found herself with a teenage daughter and a new husband along with a brand new medical degree. Soon after their marriage Daniel announced to the rest of his family that they would be moving west. Serena was sure that this was to stop her from wanting to open her own practice and in part to stop Meghan from pursuing her own dreams of being a doctor. Luke traveled with them and they began a new life in a small western town in Nebraska called Dreamville. Serena desperately wanted two things, to be allowed to practice the medicine she had given up everything to study and to have a baby of her own. She loved Meghan dearly, perhaps too much but she desperately wanted a baby of her own to love and cherish. She and Daniel had many fights about starting their own family. She could understand his fear but she needed to do this for herself if not for him to know that not all women died giving birth. But from the time they arrived in Dreamville, she felt at home there. The people friendly and charming and she even found some likely candidates for her other long neglected hobby, painting. She was very bold one day not long after Daniel and Luke had finished building the house and asked one of the young pony express riders to sit for her to paint his portrait. It took some convincing but he finally relented. Now she was in the midst of painting the striking young half breed Pony Express rider, Buck, and enjoying every minute of it knowing the crush her young step daughter had on him, and trying to help her by matchmaking whenever she could. |

INTRODUCING MEGHAN! |
|
| Meghan sat quietly by the window in her
bedroom to think about her life until this point. Two months ago her father packed up all
of their belongings to go from Boston, a major city, to a small town called Dreamville in
what seemed like the middle of nowhere. She couldn't blame him, not really. As far back as
she can remember her father was always over protective and sheltered her from anything and
everything. Still she managed to be quite outgoing and friendly. Her ability to put people
at ease around her was gained from watching her father with his patients. Her father adored her, how could he not? She was the spitting image of her mother. With her auburn hair, gray eyes and fine features, she caught the eyes of many boys in Boston, especially some of her father's students. However, Meghan never had time for them, she had always been Daniel's little girl. It could not have been prevented, they were on their own since her mother's death and her father always overcompensated in his love for her. Meg couldn't help but blame herself for her maternal loss, after all, if she had never been born, then her mother would not have died. There was very little Meghan knew of her mother, she was always afraid to bring her up to her father. She did know that her name was Elizabeth, and that she had met Daniel when they were very young. She knew her mother came from a wealthy Irish family, and that both Elizabeth and Daniel were completely devoted to each other. The only other thing she knew for certain was that her father had been devastated by her mother's death. Meg made up her mind as a young girl that she wanted to follow her father's footsteps. She thought that if she could become a doctor she could save other children the pain of growing up without a mother. Unfortunately, her father has put a stop to any of her ideas, he does not want, under any circumstances, for Meg to pursue medicine as a career. She calmly accepted this, though she hopes that one day he'll change his mind. Meg thought that time had come when she found out he had been courting one of his students. Meg liked Serena, in fact she love's her, but not as a mother. Serena was only five years older than Meg, and Meg hated the idea of her father remarrying, let alone marrying someone so young. As the two began courting, Meg resented the woman's presence and when the marriage was announced it took all of Meg's strength to stay calm and act happy. The day her father had chosen to remarry, was another strike against them. July 16, 1842 was Meg's seventeenth birthday and the anniversary of her mother's death. Meg was quite distraught the morning of the nuptials. However, the couple soon approached her with a gift. Meg was given a gold locket that had belonged to her mother. Serena asked that Meg open it, when Meg did, she found a small drawing inside that Serena had made of Meghan's mother Elizabeth from a portrait that hung in the house. Serena made it clear that day that she was in no way trying to replace the mother Meg had never known. From that day on the locket became Meg's most prized possession, she's always wearing it, and her relationship with Serena became that of sisters, always confiding and telling their dreams to each other. The one dream they shared was their love of medicine and their hopes to practice it, however, Daniel would have none of it. There was no way either of "his girls" was going to pursue and practice medicine, and to make sure neither of them would get any ideas, Daniel answered the ad for a small town doctor and moved the family and his practice to Dreamville. The family didn't go alone, Luke, a long-time friend of Serena's, came along. Meg liked Luke, just not in any romantic way. Luke was the older brother she'd never had. The two became fast friends and confidants. Once in Dreamville, Meghan met and befriended a young woman who worked at the saloon. Desi is a good friend and Meg cherishes her, however, Meghan's best friend is a rider for the Pony Express, the two met and instantly felt as if they had known each other for years. Corey Nelson is disguised as a boy and Meg is one of the few people who know of her true identity. Meghan sat on her bed, laid back onto her soft pillows and stared up at the ceiling, she smiled as she thought of the young man Serena was going to paint. Buck Cross was everything she had never known she'd wanted in a man, he was sweet, kind and best of all handsome. The only drawback was that Corey was also head over heels for him. Meg was sure that her friend wouldn't hold a grudge if Buck courted her, at least she hoped not. Then again, Meg had to take into consideration how she would feel if Buck chose to be with Corey. She'd be happy of course, wouldn't she? Meg rose slowly from her reclined position, time to help Serena with the housework, once done with that, Serena would teach her a bit more about medicine as she had been doing since she learned of Meghan's desire to become a doctor and Daniel's refusal to allow it. Meg frowned, everything would just be a little better if she could go to medical school, but since she couldn't, watching Serena paint Buck was a good substitute. As she left her room, Meg thought that Dreamville wasn't that bad a place after all. |
