MARCH 30, 1860

Dev was taking some passengers from Denver to Sweetwater. They had an overnight lay over in Dreamville though. Everything was going fine until she was about 2 hours from Dreamville. Evidently some outlaws thought that she had some gold on her stage.

Before she knew it, two men had jumped aboard her stage. One of the men held a gun to her head while the other one grabbed the reigns and stopped the stage. Four other men caught up to them. Dev knew that she could not take on all six of the men without endangering the passengers.

"Wheres the gold?" One of them asked.

"I dont have any gold." Dev replied.

"This stage is supposed to have a shipment of gold on it."

"Not this stage, Mister."

The man slapped her. "Don't lie to me!" He yelled. Just then they heard a shot and one of the men fell to the ground dead.

The remaining five men started shooting in the direction of gunfire. Dev was able to brake one man's neck and slit another's throat with the knife that she kept hidden on her at all times. The unknown shooter was able to take out two of the other men. Dev was able to overcome the sixth man. She was about to tie him up when he reached for a fallen gun. Dev's shot killed him instantly.

The passengers thought that it was safe to come out when they heard the last shot. As they gathered around the outlaws, the mystery shooter came from the bushes. A figure in the midst of the passenger's caught the shooter's eye. But no it couldn't be . . . could it?

One of the passengers saw a rider on a black Arabian horse. The horse rider moved as one and she saw that her twin was their rescuer. The passenger was coming to surprise LeAnn. But she had to remember that Lee was supposed to be a boy. She could be fired if the company found out that she was a girl. It shouldn't be hard to remember to call her Lee, after all she had given her sister that nickname when they were learning to talk.

When Lee reached the passengers, she dismounted Black and hugged her sister. "Lynn, what are you doing here?"

"I came for a visit, dear brother." Lynnette smiled as she teased Lee about her choice of jobs.

"Hi, Im Ainsley Deveraux, but you can call me Dev. Thanks for helping me out."

"Im glad I could help."

"What are you doing out here?"

"I ride for the Pony Express. Im stationed in Dreamville, and I was returning home from a run."

"Well, I guess it was our good fortune that you were around. Thanks again. Im headed to Dreamville now. We have an overnight lay over there."

"Well, I can ride along with you or ride ahead and then send the sheriff back with some men to bury these guys."

"Oh well, I can do that. I need to talk to Teaspoon any way. And I think we will be fine from here to town."

"Ok. I need to deliver this to Bythe anyway. So Ill ride on ahead and let Teaspoon know that you are coming into town. Lynn, want to ride with me?"

"Oh no. Black doesnt like anybody but you. Ill stay with Dev thank you very much."

Lee laughed, then with a twinkle in her eye asked, "Ok, then how are you going to get to the station? Its on this side of town?"

"Ill walk."

"Its a couple of miles outside of town." Lee looked at her sisters face deep in thought. "Ill tell you what, Ill meet you in town, then you can meet Teaspoon, and you can ride with me to the station. Black wont buck with me on him."

"But he has two speeds . . . stop and super fast."

"I can make him walk, Lynn."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, Im sure."

"Alright. Ill see you in town."

"Great! I cant wait for you to meet everybody!"

Dev and the passengers loaded up while Lee mounted Black and rode off at full speed.

Lee got to town a little while before Dev did, delivered the mail and then went to find Teaspoon. When she went into the sheriffs office, Kid and Buck were sitting in there talking to Teaspoon. When Lee told him what happened with Devs stage, he sent Kid and Buck out to bury the bodies, and then he questioned Lee about how Dev was. He seemed worried about her. When he was satisfied that Dev was alright, Lee told him about Lynn coming to visit. Lee told Teaspoon that he was putting Lynn through school to become a nurse, and that when Lynn was finished with school, it would be his turn to go to school to become a vet. He also told Teaspoon about how their father died and how their grandfather had turned them out.

When Dev got to town, Lynn met Teaspoon. Then Lee took Lynn to the waystation to meet the others. Lynn was very excited to meet all of the riders. Luckily most the riders were in from all the runs and Lynn got to meet them all. She had already met Jimmy on their birthday when he had surprised them both by bringing Lee to see her. She didnt get to meet Kid and Buck until supper though.

Dev and Teaspoon ate at the restaurant that night. Then they had a moonlit walk through the town, and when they reached the boarding house, he kissed her hand and went back to the station even though he hated to say good night.
