JANUARY 11, 1860
Destiny stood in the doorway of her boarding house and stared in disbelief at the young lady in front of her. Twenty minutes ago Clover had presented herself at the door, pretending to be her sister. Ordinarily, being identical twins nobody would have looked twice at the young lady, but Destiny knew better. They might be identical to the eye, but that was where the similarity ended.
Ivy was sweet and charming almost to the point of being too nice for her own good. Clover had a nasty jealous streak and usually went out of her way to hurt her sister in any way she could. Destiny was not going to allow that to happen to one of the girls she was proud to call her friend.
"Clover you are not having access to your sisters room." She said angrily, flicking her long blonde hair over her shoulder. She saw Jemima hiding around the corner of the dining room and offered her a quick smile. It was not often that she saw her mama mad.
"You cant stop me, Destiny. She is my sister, and I am allowed in." Clover had come here with the plan of damaging her sisters new dress in some way so that she wouldnt be able to attend the dance with Noah, but it appeared that she wouldnt be able to fulfil her plan.
"Like Hell!" Destiny spat. "This is my boarding house and until your sister tells me that you have permission to enter her room you are not welcome." She opened the door behind her unwelcome guest and gestured for her to leave.
Clover knew when she was not welcome and turned to leave the building flouncing out the door, as if she didnt have a care in the world. Destiny stood at the door and watched Clover as she left, making certain she did not try to gain access to Ivys room via the back staircase.
Turning back into the lobby she smiled as she saw her tiny daughter watching her with wide eyes. "Its okay, Jem," she opened her arms to the little girl. "Shes gone now."
"I dont like her mama." Jemima said.
"I know darlin, neither do I." She hugged her baby, glad in the knowledge that her offspring was growing up with the fair and untroubled heart of Ivy not the tortured soul of Clover.
