JANUARY 5, 1860

Daniel stood beside the buggy and helped his beautiful young wife down. He watched as she smoothed her skirts, and then he assisted her to walk up the steps onto the boardwalk. They had been in town for a while now and this was the first evening they had time to actually have a meal at the restaurant. They waited patiently at the reception before they were led into the restaurant itself and seated by the window, so they still had a view of the street.

"Thank you for this Danny." Serena softly said.

"Darling, Its the least I can do," he stated quietly watching the lamplight flickering on her lustrous golden hair, still entranced by the young woman that had consented to be his wife.

"I understand why you are busy, Danny." She watched the gleam in his beautiful eyes shine in the lamplight, not sure how he had fallen in love with her but eternally grateful that he had.

"Hello Clover." Daniel said, as a young red headed lady approached the table.

"Hi Dr Thomson," she smiled and nodded politely to his wife. "Are you ready to order yet?"

Daniel placed an order with the young waitress and waited until she had moved away before he talked again.

"Im sorry life is so lonely for you here," he was truly sorry that his wife was so bereft of friends but he refused to let her work anywhere near his clinic.

"Its alright, Danny." She replied. She knew that one day he would have no choice but to let her practice the skills that he himself had taught her. "I understand truly, and Im not bored. I have a lot of friends, and I am going to start painting Buck soon too." She smiled at him as their dinner arrived.

Clover left them their meals and then returned to the kitchen to complete her duties so she could return to her lonely room in the hotel.

Daniel and Serena ate their meal in relative silence and went for a walk along the boardwalk, happily taking in the sites and smells of the new town.
