THE BAKE/CRAFT/RAFFLE SALE!

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

Jacy and Walter were the first ones to arrive at Grand Square. As people arrived with their food and craft donations, Jacy showed everybody where to put everything. Jacy had explained to Mr. Simmons which tables he would be working for donations, and also told him to tell Cody when he arrives which tables Cody would be responsible for. Jacy didnt tell him the reason why but it was because the less she had deal with him the better. She liked him but she was still ticked off at him. Walter just figured it was because she had too much other stuff to get organized, so when Cody arrived, Walter showed him to his tables.

Cody was in the bunkhouse thinking about the dance as him and the others were getting ready. They were all excited about how they were going to dance with their dates.

"Bye, Cody we will see you there." Everyone shouted to him as he left the bunkhouse. He was in a nice brown colored suit with a white shirt underneath his coat. He took some money for a gift he was going to buy and left for the dance.

The others were finishing getting ready when Cody left for Caller Bobs. He had to get there earlier than the others because he was helping out by selling the items that people had donated. He was also hoping that he would get there earlier enough so that he could talk with Jacy. He still wanted to apologize, and he was hoping that she would give him another chance. He was smitten and determined to win her back no matter what.

After everything was in place Jacy took her position at the raffle table. At 9 p.m. her, Walter, and Cody would close the sales down and join the dancing crowd. Jacys plans were to go home. After an hour Jacy went over to Walter and told him she would watch his tables while he went and filled a plate of food. After he came back, Jacy went over and offered for Cody. She didnt want to but it was the kind thing to do. When he came Cody offered to keep watch over her tables while she got something to eat. As she walked to the food she thought, he can be nice and considerate sometimes. She set her food down at one of tables without saying a word to Cody.

Earlier Cody had spotted the perfect gift at Mr. Simmons table. He paid $5.00 for it and had put it in his pocket. He had almost taken it out of his pocket and gave it to Jacy when he was over at her table purchasing raffle tickets. He had tried to apologize to her then but other people had come up to her table and had captured her attention, so he decided to wait on his apology.

Earlier that day Cody and Walter had purchased some raffle tickets. Cody bought 10 and Walter bought 50. Jacy had Walter and Cody watch as she purchased 10, 5 for her and 5 for Melissa, though earlier Jimmy had bought some for Melissa. But Jacy had promised Melissa that she would buy her some raffle tickets. Melissa wanted to win the saddle very much so that for the past weeks thats all she talked about besides Jimmy. Melissa had an enormous crush on Jimmy. Jacy just couldnt figure out what Jimmy saw in her little sister. She thought he should be dating someone a little older, but as long as he didnt hurt Melissa, she would let sleeping dogs lie.

It was almost time for them to close up their tables, all of Jacys items had been sold, so all she had left were raffle tickets. She wandered over to Walters table and looked at several of the items. Then she starting admiring the vanity table that hadnt been sold yet.

"Its superb craftmanship. I should know my brother made it. He was the best woodworker in the land, lots of folks said so besides me. There was another girl here looking at it, too." Walter hadnt tried to sell the vanity table that hard all evening because of that other girl who had been admiring it earlier. No one had wanted to pay $20.00 for it anyway, and so Walter had thought he might purchase for the little girl. When Jacy didnt comment, he said, "It was your little sister."

"Melissa was looking at it?" Jacy asked.

"Yep! She seemed mighty interested in it, too, so much so that I was thinking of buying it for her even though I donated it." Walter replied.

Jacy knew that Melissa had mentioned to her several times that she wished they had a mirror and some furniture in their room that was theirs instead of their grandpas. Their bedroom only has a bed, a nightstand beside the bed, and a chest of drawers with a wash basin on top. "How much Mr. Simmons?"

"Please call me Walter. How much do you offer?"

"Ten dollars." Jacy doubted Walter would agree. She had seen him earlier trying to get twenty for it.

"How about $15.00." Walter countered.

"Sold!" Jacy handed him the money quickly before he changed his mind. But now after purchasing it, she didnt know what to do with it, and how she was to get it home.

Walter saw her predicament and came to her rescue. "Im sure Caller Bob will see that you get it and until then Ill put it in a safe place while were all enjoying the dance. Relieved Jacy thanked him and headed to the corral to find her a good spot to watch the dancers.

Before the dance commences Caller Bob bought him a supper plate, and after eating he went around looking at all the donations. He had already purchased the 3 old chairs that Walter had donated. He had already repaired them and set them around the corral for people to sit on. Earlier today Kid, Ike and Buck had stopped by to give him a hand setting around the chairs and tables for the festivities.

As Caller Bob came by Walters table, Walter stopped him and told him that Jacy had bought the vanity table. He asked Caller Bob if he could deliver it to her place, and Caller Bob agreed to take it to her home tomorrow. It was almost time for the dancing to begin, so Caller Bob made his way to the corral.
