APRIL 1, 1860
Cody quickly read over the poem that Kathleen had helped him write. He had been trying to think of a special way to give it to Jacy, but every idea he thought of, he kept shooting it down as not being good enough for her. He reread the poem again, and then he heard Jimmy yell. "Rider Comin!" So he quickly shoved the poem under his pillow just as Jesse entered the bunkhouse to tell him that he was up.
"I know. I know. Im going." Cody grabbed his rifle and ran out the door, mounted Prankster, grabbed the mail from the rider, and took off.
Jesse went over to Codys bunk and lifted his pillow. He pulled out the paper and read it. Cody was always playing tricks on everybody at the station, especially Jesse. Someway, somehow Jesse knew there had to be way of getting even with Cody. And this poem might just be the answer. He would figure something out. So he took the poem with him.
Melissa was waiting outside for him. They were going to swing by and get Michael and then go to the lake to do some fishing. Rose had told them that she would meet them later after helping her mom at the boutique.
They fished for a while, and they each caught a fish. Melissa didnt fish as much as usual because she had brought her puppy along with her, and she had to chase after him a lot.
Michael had helped Melissa name the puppy. Melissa chased after Smoke once again, picked him up and plopped it down in front of Michaels feet. Michael smiled up at her, and she sat down close to him.
All three of them began to wonder where Rose was. They decided to go into town and look for her. They entered the boutique, and Jasmine told them that Rose went home to change and then she was going to meet them. They said their goodbyes and Melissa led the boys over to the PEG.
Jimmy had just rode into town when he saw the trio entering the newspaper office. He wondered what they were up to. Jesse was always up to some kind of mischief. That boy takes after Cody. Although I think one day he might end up in bigger trouble than Cody ever could.
The kids entered, and Jacy was surprised, but thankful. Jacy had put together some lunch for them, and she was going to bring it out to them, but Melissa decided to take it with them instead. Jacy was glad that she wouldnt have to take them their lunch. She was into an article for the paper, and she didnt want to stop while the juices were flowing. "Ive got the basket all packed in the kitchen."
Melissa and Michael followed Jacy to the kitchen. But this was Jesses golden opportunity. He went to the desk. He reread the poem and put it down. He would leave it here, and with a note asking Jacy to publish it. Once Cody saw it he would flip. All his love words for everybody to see. Wait a minute Jesse couldnt remember if Cody had signed it or not. If he had his plan wouldnt work because he didnt think that Jacy would publish it if she thought that Cody had wrote it for her. It was too private for publishing.
As Jesse grabbed for the poem, Jimmy walked in. Seeing Jesse pick up something from Jacys desk enraged him. "JESSE!"
Startled Jesse dropped the paper to the floor. Jimmy walked over and picked it up, but before he could say anything, the girls and Michael appeared.
"What you doing, Jimmy?" Melissa asked noticing the paper in his hand.
"I was just gonna put this on the desk." He moved to do just that, but no sooner had he done it then Melissa picked it up and began to read it silently to herself.
Teaspoon came riding into town. He was looking for Jimmy. He needed him to take a run because one of the riders from the other station came in early, and Ike wasnt due in for two more hours. He would have Jimmy take Ikes run, and Ike take his run.
Jimmy needed to explain the bear situation to Jacy, but first he better explain why he had been holding that paper. He didnt want them to think he had been snooping. "Jesse was . . ."
"Jimmy." Teaspoon exclaimed. "I need ya son to take a run. The rider is early and Ikes not in yet. Ike will take your run tonight."
Jimmy nodded, "Alright Teaspoon." Jimmy just couldnt get a break. Every time he wanted to talk with Jacy something always happened. Jimmy followed Teaspoon out of the office.
As Teaspoon was leaving he said, "Im sorry, but work beckons." Jacy smiled at Teaspoon as she noticed that it seemed to her that Jimmy really wanted to stay and talk, but he had no choice.
After Teaspoon and Jimmy were gone Melissa took Jacy aside and showed her the poem that Jimmy had left. "See Jacy he does like you."
"Maybe he just wrote it to put it in the newspaper." Jacy replied.
"Maybe both to apologize and to put it in the paper." Melissa said. She handed the paper to Jacy, and then Melissa and the boys left.
