OCTOBER 13, 1860
As Charlie saddled Jack, he hoped that maybe he could turn Caly's affections from Buck. He thought maybe he could do that if he took her to the Halloween Party. He knew it would be a tough job. He mounted up and rode out to the SJ Ranch to place another order.
Steven was in his office when he heard someone knock on the front door. He heard Caly greet whoever it was.
Caly knocked on the office door, "Pa, Charlie's here to see you."
"Send him in, Baby. Thank you." Steven replied.
Caly opened the door and let Charlie into the office. "Youre welcome, Pa. I'll bring in some coffee for you both as soon as its ready."
Steven nodded and offered Charlie a seat as Caly left the room shutting the door behind her.
"In need of another order already, Charlie?" Steven jokingly asked.
Charlie smiled, "Yes, I need to order again. Business has been great. When people go to see Grace, they stop by and eat at the restaurant after they get their costumes. I see Caly is doing better then the last time I saw her."
"Yes, she's doing better. She still has nightmares and won't be alone with a young man for fear he'll hurt her too." He looked up as he heard the door open, and he smiled as Caly brought in a tray with coffee on it.
Setting it on the desk, Caly informed the men, "If you need anything, I'll be on the porch for awhile."
"Thank you Baby. I think we'll be okay." Steven replied.
Caly nodded then turned and left them alone to talk.
Charlie turned to Steven and said, "I have been thinking about the Halloween Party. I was hoping you would give your permission for me to take Caly to the party?"
Steven thought about it. Then said. "I'm okay with it if she'll agree to go. But I want a chaperone to go with you."
Charlie, knowing that this was the custom of this part of the country, nodded waiting for Steven to continue.
Steven smiled then continued. "I would like Buck to chaperone. She trusts Buck completely. He's been her confident and right by her side through this whole mess. She'll feel safe with him nearby."
"Alright, thats fine. I don't want to make her uneasy."
Steven smiled. "Alright I'll talk with Buck. If Caly's not on the porch, she'll be in town later today or tomorrow."
Charlie nodded and placed his order. Steven walked Charlie to the door. They noticed that Caly wasn't anywhere around.
"She's probably in the barn doing her chores." Steven said.
"Oh, thats okay. I'll catch her in town then. Thanks again, Steven." Charlie said as he extended his hand.
"Oh, your welcome it will do her good. "Steven replied and shook his hand and Charlie mounted up and headed back to town with a wave over his shoulder to his friend.
