JUNE 12, 1860

Charlie was leafing through the PEG on his coffee break when he noticed his ad. He thought he had told Jacy that she didn’t need to publish it again because the position was filled. Well, he had been very busy lately, so he had probably thought he had, but actually he had forgotten. He folded up the newspaper and told Charity that he had an errand to run. As he left Silver Spoon he wondered if maybe hiring another cook wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Well, he would try running it with one cook first, and if it became too much trouble for Charity then he would have Jacy run the ad again.

As he entered the PEG he saw Beauregard and Jacy in a deep discussion, but as soon as they saw him they abruptly stopped. Silence lingered a few minutes. Jacy and Beauregard were both thinking the same thing. How much had Charlie heard?

Charlie felt he had just stumbled into a rattlesnake pit, and at any minute he would get bit for his intrusion. The quiet was unbearable, so he broke the silence first, "I’m sorry to intrude. Shall I come back later?"

Jacy stared at Beauregard, and Beauregard replied, "No! I was just leaving." He started to walk away, but stopped and turned his head. "We’ll continue this later." With a smug smile on his face, he waited for a reply.

"Alright, later." Jacy said and then, "Please Charlie come on in."

"Charlie."

"Beauregard."

They both nodded as they passed each other. After Beauregard left Jacy asked, "Now what can I do for you, Charlie?" He had insisted that she call him that the day they had met, and he had submitted two ads for the paper.

"He’s not giving you a hard time is he?"

"No, No! He’s just . . . well, we’re just . . . having a little difference of an opinion." Seeing his grimace, she continued, "But I’m sure we will work it out. Now what can I do for you?"

"I stopped by to tell you that you don’t need to run the help wanted ad anymore. I’ve found a good cook."

"Oh yeah, I should I have known that, since I was at the engagement party." Charlie shook his head and grinned. "What?"

"I saw you."

"So?"

"If you could even remember your name that night it would have been a miracle."

Not following his train of thought, she asked again, "What?"

"It’s just that you were on Cloud 9, dancing with that blond-haired lad. You two make a very cute couple."

Jacy blushed and quickly turned her head. True she had been slow dancing with Cody, and man did it ever feel like heaven, but she hadn’t realized that people had noticed.

"Good Luck!"

"Good Luck?"

"Yeah, with you and your beau." Charlie smiled as he watched Jacy blush again. "Keep running the restaurant ad, but you can kill the help wanted one." He said as he strolled out the door.
