ARRIVING HOME FEBRUARY 14, 1860 |
| Catherine
didn't come back to the hotel. She rode a little while first, and then she finally rode
back to the hotel. Catherine got down from her horse and walked in by the kitchen's
backdoor. She looked at the table and she saw a birthday cake. She smiled shyly knowing
that Laura had cooked it for her. "Laura went to bed. She waited for you, but she got tired," Bird said as he stood in the doorway behind Catherine. Catherine turned to him, "I needed to be alone for awhile. I will talk with her tomorrow morning," Catherine sat down at the table. "Happy Birthday!" Bird took a seat beside Catherine. She smiled back, "Thanks." "Do you want to talk about it?" " About what?" Catherine asked. "About why you need to be alone?" "I made a mistake, Bird," Catherine said, ashamed at what she had done. "Jimmy Hickok?" "How do you know it has something to do with him?" Catherine replied intrigued. "It's written in your face. You can hide from everyone else, but not from me. I know you too well," Bird replied smiling. "What happened between you two?" Bird completed. "I kissed him." "Why?" "What kind of questions is that? I don't know. We met and we started to argue with each other, and I kissed him. I don't know what happens with me when he is around. He drives me crazy," Catherine answered. "Can't you see Mac? We are here for a reason. The Great Spirit brought us here, and it was meant to be. Jimmy was meant to be. You two needed to meet each other," Bird explained to Catherine, "You have a chance to restart here." "It doesn't matter where I go Bird, you know I cant hide from who I am. I can't avoid that. I have a cord on my neck and a place in the cemetery with my name on it," Catherine affirmed sadly as she was standing up. "You're right. You can't avoid what life has ready for you, but now you need to let yourself be happy for a change." Bird said holding her hand, "Jimmy Hickok can make you happy." "But I can't make him happy. I'm not the right woman for him, Bird," Catherine replied walking towards her office. "You can't run from Jimmy or from your feelings Mac. You need him," Bird was saying as he watched Catherine walk to her office. He could still hear her replying. "I need a drink. That's all I need!" And she walked in thinking about the bottle of whisky she had left earlier on her desk. |
