MARCH 29, 1960
Jimmy walked in the saloon and he ordered sarsaparilla. He was looking through the window, when he saw Catherine's Indian friend, Bird, walking down the boardwalk. Leaving his drink in the bar he walked out the saloon and touched Bird's arm to get his attention.
"Hey, Bird. How are you?" Jimmy said.
"I'm fine Jimmy. You seem a little tired, are you ok?" Bird had already met Jimmy, but this was the first time Jimmy had initiated a conversation with him
"I'm fine Bird, It's just . . . Well, I need to talk with you, but I don't know if I should say something to you about it or not."
"What about Jimmy? Theres no need to be shy. Weve talked before. You don't need to be shy with me," Jimmy smiled at Bird. He had liked the old Indian when they had first met. Noticing that Jimmy seemed a little nervous Bird asked him to walk with him. Jimmy agreed.
For about a half of an hour Jimmy and Bird walked through Dreamville, they talked about everything and sometimes about nothing at all. Bird told Jimmy about his life in the Sioux tribe and about his wife and son. Jimmy also talked about his family and about his decision to leave his family back on Illinois.
Back at the hotel, they were talking in the entranceway, and Bird noticed Jimmy's interest in the office's door.
"She 's not here, Jimmy," Bird said surprising Jimmy.
"Who?" Jimmy replied. Bird gave him a serious look and Jimmy continued, "Where can I find her Bird? I need to have a talk with her." Bird told him about her evening rides and, Jimmy started to walk back to the jailhouse where he had left Sundancer, but after a few steps Jimmy turned to Bird and said, "Thanks Bird," Bird nodded smiled.
Some time later Jimmy was riding close to town. Jimmy was still looking for Catherine, not knowing what to say yet but he needed to find her. About six miles from the town, he could see Catherine standing up next to her horse, Thief. She was looking to the sunset.
Hearing a noise Catherine turned and she saw Jimmy approaching. He left his horse next to hers and walking towards Catherine. Jimmy just couldn't think what to do at that moment, he was nervous. He knew he needed to say something about the kiss. But when she looked at him and smiled all the nervousness disappeared. He knew he could talk to her.
"Hi Catherine!" Jimmy said shyly.
"Hello Mr. Hickok."
"Call me Jimmy, ok?"
"If you prefer. What are you doing here Jimmy?"
"I think I should ask you that. It's getting late and dark. It's dangerous for a . . . I mean you shouldn't be here alone," Jimmy saw her face turn serious as he tried to correct his words.
"Why don't you say it? Its dangerous for a woman. Thats what you wanted to say. Well, Mr. Hickok it might be dangerous but not just for a woman for a man, too, and I can take care of myself." Jimmy knew he was misunderstood. Catherine started to walk to her horse, and Jimmy held her arm making her stop.
Catherine turned to him and looked into her eyes. "What?" she asked.
"Look Catherine, I'm sorry. I didn't mean you can't take care of yourself. Please can't we just forget what I said and start over?" Catherine nodded. They sat down under a tree, and Catherine and Jimmy remained in silence for some time then Jimmy finally said, "Thank you."
Catherine looked at him. "Why?" She asked.
"For saving my life. I know I should have told you before, but I was . . ."
"You were what Jimmy?"
"I've been busy with my job. I just haven't had time to thank you for saving my life, and I have to admit I was afraid to talk to you."
Catherine laughed. Jimmy looked seriously at her. "I'm sorry but James Butler Hickok afraid of something, I don't believe it."
"It's true, I didn't know how to talk with you. You aren't exactly like the others girls and after what happened at the Valentine's dance." He didnt comment any further, but watched her reaction.
Catherine turned her eyes from him. It was so embarrassing to her. "Oh about that Jimmy," she started, "I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to cause you embarrassment. I was having a bad day, and I was drunk."
"Well, I figured out that from the whiskey smell," He replied with a smile on his face. Catherine smiled too.
"I'm sorry, really. I'm not going to do that again."
"I understand, it's ok. You just took me by surprise," Jimmy was trying not to make the situation worse, "Wait, what aren't you doing again, drinking or kissing me?"
"Ill let you decide that," she teased. Jimmy gave her a serious look. She had did it again, he was speechless. "I'm just kidding, Jimmy. I won't kiss you again. I hope we can be friends. I would like your friendship."
"I would like that, too, Catherine." Jimmy replied.
"Fine," Catherine affirmed and then she gave Jimmy a kiss on his cheek. Jimmy blushed.
"What was that for?" Jimmy asked. He knew he needed to talk about his feelings. He just didn't know how. He would talk to Teaspoon later.
"Because I wanted to." Catherine said standing up. Jimmy followed her.
"Where are you going?" Jimmy asked seeing Catherine walking back to her horse.
"I need to go back now, like you said its dangerous for a woman here at night." Catherine answered while she mounted her horse.
"Ill ride back with you?" Jimmy said mounting his horse, too.
"You don't need to. I don't need protection."
"Oh, I'm not going to protect you. Someone told me that its dangerous for men stay here at night, too, so I thought I might use your company as protection. Besides if I don't get back to the station, Cody will eat all the food." Jimmy replied starting to ride. Catherine laughed and followed him.
As they rode Jimmy said, "There is another reason I came to find you."
Catherine looked at him and said, "Can we talk about it tomorrow. Its getting late, and I don't feel like it?"
Jimmy nodded and said, "Okay, tomorrow then."
Jimmy went to the hotel with Catherine. Tonight the town was calm and quiet.
Catherine thanked Jimmy for his company. "It was nice, Jimmy, our talk. I enjoyed your company." Jimmy looked at her surprised. He didn't expect those words.
"I liked talking with you, too. Good Night Catherine," Jimmy replied and then walked back to his horse while Catherine walked into the hotel.
