SEPTEMBER 13, 1860

Caly was sitting on the bunkhouse porch with her hat pulled down over her eyes writing in her notebook that she always had with her, when Teaspoon walked up to her and cleared his throat, "Hmm . . . Caly?"

Caly looked up blocking the sun with her hand, "Yes Teaspoon?"

"You up for a ride?"

"Sure I don't want to be treated any different." Caly said as she stood and picked up the gun belt that sat next to her.

"I know, but the boys would be upset if you got hurt. You mean a lot to them."

"I know. But they taught me well. They know I can handle myself."

Teaspoon nodded and waited as she strapped on her gun. Just then Tyson brought Star from the barn along with the horse, Trixsy. He had chosen her to ride since he had begun working for the Pony Express. He knew Trixsy officially belonged to Jacy, but he wondered if ownership had reverted back to Cody since Jacy couldnt be found.

Stepping onto the porch Tyson said, "Okay Teaspoon, I'm ready to go."

Caly looked up at Teaspoon, "What? Okay Teaspoon what is going on?"

Raising his hands Teaspoon said, "Now Caly, I want two guns on this run. Thats why I'm sending Tyson with you. "

Caly started to say something when Rachel called out, "Rider Comin."

Caly and Tyson mounted up and waited for the hand off. Teaspoon walked up to Tyson and said quietly, "Keep an eye on her, I promised the boys and her father she would be okay on a run."

Tyson nodded, "I will, don't worry."

Taking the hand off Caly and Tyson headed towards Fort Laramie. They rode for several hours. After switching horses twice Caly said, "Its getting dark. Why don't we stop for the night? I'm not real sure of the trail in the dark."

Tyson agreed. So they stopped for the night and made camp. As Caly took care of the horses and started a fire, Tyson hunted up a rabbit.

They sat around the fire and ate. Tyson noticed Caly was a bit uneasy. "Caly? Everything okay?"

Caly flashed him a weary smile and said, "Oh yes. Its just the first time I've been away from home over night since it happened."

Reaching over Tyson squeezed her hand saying, "Youre doing good. The riders and your father would be proud of you. Now why don't we get some sleep. Morning will come pretty fast. We should be at Fort Laramie by lunch."

Caly nodded and laid back pulling her coat tight around her.

Tyson smiled and watched her. Now there's a brave young lady. He thought as he settled back and went to sleep.

Waking early Caly got the coffee going while she saddled Star. Then she got her bedroll and saddlebags and put them on her saddle.

Tyson woke and watched her. He could tell that she hadn't sleep well, but he didnt say anything. He poured two cups of coffee and handed her one as she sat down.

"Thank you, Tyson." Caly said and smiled at him.

Tyson got his stuff together while Caly put the fire out and mounted up. They arrived at Fort Laramie by lunchtime. They stopped just outside of town so Caly could pull her hair up under her hat.

Watching her Tyson said, "Let me do the talking. If you stay quiet and keep your hat low over your eyes and your jacket tight they wont know youre a girl." Caly wanted to protest but knew she was to be a boy while at the station, so she nodded in agreement.

They handed off the pouch and ate lunch. Then they headed back towards Dreamville. They rode hard to get back. Caly knew Tyson wanted to slow the pace, but she really didnt want to spend another night outside.

Tyson finally caught up with Caly. Reaching over he grabbed the reins and pulled on them, "Caly stop! We can't go any further tonight. Whats bothering you?"

Caly had no choice but to stop. Looking at Tyson saying, "Nothings bothering me. I just would rather sleep in a bed then on the ground is all."

Tyson nodded in agreement knowing she was hiding something but wouldn't push her. "I know. I would too, but I don't want to chance hurting the horses. So lets stop for the night."

Caly nodded and looked for a place to make camp. They made camp just off the trail in a small cluster of trees where they settled in for the night.

Caly tossed and turned mumbling, "Please don't, please." Tyson sat up as he heard her. He watched her to make sure she was okay, and then when she finally quieted down and stopped moaning, Tyson started to lay back down. But as he did so, he heard some twigs snapping nearby. While he looked around Caly sat up screaming and shaking.

Tyson could see the fear in Calys eyes. Moving quickly to her side he tried to calm her. Caly took one look at him and backed away from him in fear. The faster she tried to get to her feet the more she fell. Finally getting to her feet she ran from Tyson. Crying in fear she didn't watch where she was running, and she fell in a hole.

It was getting close to dawn so it was light out, but the sun hadnt rose yet. Sitting up Caly looked around and saw a body laying next to her. Caly let out a blood-curdling scream. Standing quickly Caly tried to climb out of the hole.

Hearing Calys scream Tyson quickly ran in that direction. Finding a hole he kneeled down, leaned over the edge and saw Caly and a motionless body on the floor of the hole. Stretching his hand out he reached for her, "Caly grab my hand."

"Get me out of here. "Caly called to him frantically as she reached for his hand.

Grabbing her hand with both of his Tyson pulled her out of the hole and led her back to camp. He knew he had to investigate. But Caly wouldn't let go of him. She was very scared. Man he wished Buck was here. He would know just want to do. Reaching for his saddlebags Tyson pulled out a flask of whiskey he always carried with him when he traveled. "Caly drink this it will steady your nerves."

With shaking hands Caly took the flask and downed the contents. She coughed as it went down. With a very shaky quiet voice she asked, "Who was that?"

"I don't know. I should go see if he's still alive. Will you be okay? I promise I'll be right back. I just want to cheek and see."

"Caly nodded, "Just give me my gun, please."

Tyson nodded and handed her the gun. Standing up he said, "You yell if you need me." Then he wrapped a blanket around her as her head bobbed up and down.

Caly watched Tyson disappear. She never looked away from where he had gone. Soon she began to wonder what was taking him so long. The sun started to rise when she saw him reappear. Tyson had scouted the area finding no one except the dead body. He concluded, the noise he had heard before Caly had taken off, must have been made by an animal.

Still shaking Caly looked at him for an answer. Tyson saw the look of apprehension on her face. He shook his head. "I'm sorry he was already dead."

Caly sat down nodding. Tyson walked over and knelt by her. "Let me saddle the horses and then we can be on our way. We should be home by mid morning."

Caly nodded as she stared into the fire. Tyson squeezed her shoulder and went to saddle the horses. Caly tried to pull herself together, but she just couldn't stop shaking.

"You ready? I think you should have Daniel check you out. That was a long fall you took."

Caly nodded when she stood up. She limped over to Star and mounted up.

Tyson noticed her limping but decided not to say anything unless she referred to it. She had been through enough. He mounted up, and they headed towards town.

After arriving in town they headed straight for the post office. Climbing down off Star, Calys knee gave out, and she landed on the ground. In the process she twisted her ankle. Tyson helped her up. "Lean on me, okay?" She nodded as they headed into the store and then into the post office.

Blythe saw Tyson helping a limping Caly in. "Caly, Tyson what happened?" She didn't continue when she saw Tyson shake his head.

From the barbershop Buck had seen Tyson helping Caly into the general store. Since he had no customers, he immediately ran over to the store. "Caly, what happened to you?"

Caly turned to look at him, and she could see the fear in his eyes. Mumbling to herself she said, "Darn nightmares," as he approached her.

Buck spoke to Tyson as Caly handed over the pouch to Blythe. Buck walked over and picked Caly up startling her.

"What are you doing, Buck?"

"I'm taking you to the doc. I was afraid those nightmares would come back." Buck replied as Tyson followed them over to the clinic.

As they walked into the clinic they were greeted by Destiny. Destiny immediately opened the door to the exam room. Daniel came into the room. "What happened Caly?"

Tyson explained as he and Buck were escorted from the room. Daniel returned and looked at Caly's knee and ankle. "Your nightmares are back, arent they?" Daniel asked.

"They never left and what I saw last night wont help them go away either." Caly answered in a quiet voice.

"Hmm your knee and ankle aren't broken just badly sprained, but I want you to stay off them for a few days." Daniel said as he bandaged them up. Afterwards he handed her some crutches.

Caly nodded. Daniel helped her up and over to the door. He told Buck and Tyson about her knee and ankle and also about the nightmares. Tyson you take her back to the station, and I want her to rest for the rest of the day." Tyson nodded and picked Caly up and carried her over to her horse and set her on it.

Before riding off Tyson told Buck and Daniel that he would return to notify Teaspoon of the dead body after getting Caly settled in at the bunkhouse. Daniel and Buck both nodded their heads in understanding.

Buck watched them ride off. Turning to Daniel he said, "I need to tell her father what happened." Daniel nodded and watched as Buck ran towards the saloon looking for Steven.
