JUNE 10, 1860
Looking at the latest edition of the PEG, she suddenly realized that she had forgotten about her story with everything that had happened to her. She thought about it, and then went into her fathers study and found her notebook that contained her story.
Sitting at the desk she started to work on the next chapter. It felt good to be writing again. As she worked on it she thought about how Buck would feel when he found out she was the author.
After working on it for several hours she sat back satisfied. Now she needed to get it to Jacy. But she would have to be more careful, because the town was growing, and there were more people around now then there used to be.
Copying her next chapter over, so that she could keep a copy for herself, she then folded it and headed for the barn. She put the papers in her pocket and saddled Starbright. Walking her from the barn Caly took a deep breath, mounted up and headed for town.
Arriving at the back of the newspaper office Caly dismounted and tied Starbright to the post. Though it was two hours after dusk, there was still some activity on the street, so she had to be very cautious.
She crept up to the door and put her ear to it. She didnt hear anybody in the kitchen, so she sigh a note of relief. She knew usually around this time there wasnt anybody in the kitchen, but she hadnt done this in months, so she was glad that the fact still rang true that they werent in the kitchen at this time of night.
As Caly was about to slide the papers under the door, she heard a noise in the alleyway. She quickly turned and pressed herself up against the door, hoping that she wouldnt be noticed. She held her breath and stood as still as she could as she watched the person come into view.
A gray-haired man, old and skinny came stumbling down the alleyway. He hit the PEGs porch railing and then swooned over to the side of the saloon building. Holding onto the wall he felt his way to the end of it and rounded the corner.
As soon as the old drunk disappeared from Calys sight, she exhaled and released the tension in her body. She couldnt believe her good fortune. It had only been a drunk, and she was glad of that. But just in case the drunk came back this way, she hurriedly slid the papers under the door, mounted Starbright and rode off.
On the way home she was surprised to run into Buck who was heading towards her house. Buck was also surprised to see Caly out this late. After exchanging hellos they rode in silence for awhile enjoying each others company and Buck was hoping that she would explain why she was out riding at this time of night. But after awhile when it seemed liked Caly wasnt going to say anything Buck decided to strike up the conversation. "Im glad to see you out on your own. But may I ask why you are out so late?"
Grinning Caly said, "Youll just have to wait to find out."
Buck shock his head saying, "If I have to. I have to run into town and get a few thinks for Rachel. Would you like to join me?"
Caly thought about it for a minute then she turned to him and said, "Okay, but no twenty questions okay?"
Buck nodded then said, "Have you been reading the story in the paper about a girl named Sarah who likes me?"
"Yeah I have. Its good. I wonder what will happen next between you and Sarah."
Buck blushed saying, "I would like to fine out myself." He could see the mischief in her eyes.
"You wouldnt happen to know who has been writing that story would you? Buck said as he shook his head.
Shaking her head Caly said, "Now Buck, how could little ole me know?" Then she kicked Starbright into a run.
Buck kicked Wind Dancer into a run and followed her. Catching up to her he said, "You do know. I'll get it out of you soon enough." Buck smiled Knowing Caly was almost back to herself. They talked and teased all the way to town like they used to before everything happened. Caly helped Buck get the things he was after. Then they rode back to Calys house. Buck made sure she made it home safe and then he returned to the station.
