AUGUST 2, 1860
Caller Bob had just collected a letter from Blythe in the post office and was just about to leave the general store when Cody walked in. "Good afternoon, Cody." Head bowed Cody mumbled good morning and walked past Caller Bob without even looking at him. This was surprising to Caller Bob. He hadnt seen Cody look so gloomy before. He tucked his envelope into his inside shirt pocket, turned around and followed Cody to the counter. "Cody whats wrong?"
Cody shook his head. He didnt know where to begin, and thought maybe he shouldnt even talk about it. But Caller Bob wasnt going to leave without finding out what was wrong. After a few minutes of coaxing Cody told Caller Bob about having a drink at the bordello and how Jacy had seen him leaving the place. She had also seen Elena with him, and now he knew that she was madder than a bee stuck under a ladys bonnet.
Caller Bob listened to Codys story without butting in once. Afterwards he thought for a few minutes, and then he said, "Come on Cody."
He started to walk towards the door, but Cody stopped him. "Where are we going?"
"Youll see. Just follow me." Caller Bob held the door opened and Cody followed him outside. But they hadnt went far when Cody knew where they were going.
"Its no use. She ran into her office and slammed the door. She doesnt want to see me." Cody explained as he stopped in his tracks.
"She will listen. You just have to say to her exactly what you just told me. Come on. Besides I know firsthand that if you dont explain things now to a lady then they a more reluctant to believe you when you do decide to talk to them. Its better to get it out in the open. Trust me." Caller Bob stated with years of experience under his belt.
Cody continued to follow hoping that Caller Bob was right. They stood in front of the bar, and Caller Bob ordered two beers, and also asked Steven to get Miss Jacy for him. After placing the mugs in front of them, Steven went to Jacys office.
Caller Bob and Cody sipped their beers and waited. Steven came back to the bar, and a minute later Jacy walked out of the office and came to stand in front of Caller Bob. "Hi CB," Thats what Melissa had started calling the mayor, and Jacy had picked up on it. "What can I do for ya?"
"Well, for starters you could hear Cody out." Caller Bob replied.
Jacy shrugged her shoulders, "He doesnt have to say anything to me." Jacy knew she didnt own Cody. He had the right to do whatever he wanted, but it didnt mean that she was going to like it either.
"He does have something he wants to say to you." Caller Bob stated, and then turned to lean back against the bar so that Cody and Jacy could see each other better.
"Jacy, listen I wasnt in the bordello for anything but a drink with a friend. And I was also trying to learn anything about the place that might help you out. Honest!" Cody held out his hands in a plea of understanding.
"Right." Jacy said sarcastically.
"Its the god honest truth, Jacy. Elena just came out, and she was telling me that she has some sort of special rate for fellas on Wednesdays, but I would never, not ever, be interested in her. Youre the only one for me. Please believe me Jacy. Please!" Cody begged. He studied her facial expressions while waiting patiently for her response.
Jacy thought for a few minutes. He didnt have any need to lie to her. It wasnt liked they were engaged or anything, and he sure seemed to be seriously concerned about whether or not she believed him. "Alright, I believe you." She smiled.
Codys face lit up, and he grabbed Jacy around the waist and twirled her around. "Jacy I will never hurt you, and I will never lie to you. We will always have an open and honest relationship." He felt her grip relax around his shoulders, and he gently put her down. "Right?" Jacy frowned but it was so quick that Cody wasnt sure if she had meant to do it. All Jacy could do was nod her head. She couldnt speak for her voice might betray her. She wasnt certain which way though. Would she blurt out the truth or would she simple cover her already falsifications with another lie. "Is something wrong, Jacy?"
Jacy finally decided to take the easy way out. She smiled and said, "No, Im fine. Im glad weve made up." As Jacys grin widened so did Codys.
"See alls well, that ends well." Caller Bob said.
