AUGUST 28, 1860
The morning after Luke returned home, he went to Caller Bob’s and paid twenty dollars for Buck to get back to the station. It was nothing against Buck. He just wanted to spend time with his wife--alone--without worrying about Buck accidentally interrupting.
Caller Bob rode into town and walked into the Aussie Emporium and announced, "Buck, you can go back to the station. You've been bailed out."
Buck looked at Luke, who only shrugged his shoulders as if to say I don't know.
"Who?"
"They wanted to remain anonymous." Caller Bob said. "Have a nice day."
"Well, I guess, I'll see you later, Luke. Give Meg my best."
"Will do, Mate."
"I'll ride out to the station with you, Buck. I need to set someone else free." Caller Bob remarked.
Buck laughed and agreed. Caller Bob found Michael and told him that he could go back home.
"Can Caly come with me?" Michael asked.
"Not yet, son. Someone has to pay for her." Caller Bob informed Michael.
Michael checked his pockets. He only had five dollars. He knew that he would be getting an allowance, but he didn't want to leave without his sister. He pulled Buck aside. "Buck, I only have half of it. Could you go in half with me?"
Buck was touched by Michael’s action. "Well, Michael, I could pay for all of it for you. That way you won't be broke." When Michael looked hurt, Buck changed his mind, "But now that I think about it, I think it would mean a lot to her for her brother to pay for her. Sure I will put up half. How much do I owe you?"
"Five dollars" Michael replied.
"Here you go. You can go tell Caller Bob right now." Buck said as he handed the money to a beaming Michael.
When Michael caught up with Caller Bob he paid him the ten dollars for Caly to go home. "Thank you, Michael. Could you go get your sister for me, so I can give her the good news?"
"Sure," Michael said as he ran off grinning.
When Caly heard the news, she wondered, "Who paid the money?"
"Michael did." Caller Bob said and was off to set some more people free.
Caly was touched that her brother paid for her to go home.
