AUGUST 16, 1860
Buck was sitting at the table with Meg eating breakfast. He knew Meg was glad he was there. They had gotten to be close friends, but he knew she missed Luke.
Meg looked up across the table at Buck and smiled. She had enjoyed having him there, but she was ready for Luke to come home. Looking at him she could tell he was confused about how he felt about Caly and Corey. She knew he had been out with Caly a few times riding and had taken her to supper a few weeks ago. She had talked with Caly a few times, and she knew her and Buck had gotten even closer since the incident back in March.
She didn't want to push him. She would love to see him with Corey, but whomever he picked she knew he would be happy and that was what mattered the most to her. After a few minutes she said, "Buck do you have any plans for today?"
"I thought I would go into town to the post office. You want to come along?" Buck replied
Meg smiled and answered, "Oh, no thank you. I was going to ride out to the station to see if I can spend some time with Luke. But why don't you pack a picnic lunch and see if Corey would like to join you."
Buck thought about it. Then nodding he said, "I think thats a good idea. I haven't spent much time with her. I have been worried about Caly. I'm afraid her nightmares might come back while shes away from home."
Meg could see the concern for Caly on his face. Reaching across the table and taking his hand she said, "Caly's strong. Luke and the others are there to help her if she needs it. They'll keep her safe." Buck nodded his head. Meg was right. He knew the others would keep her safe. "I'll pack your saddle bags while you saddle Wind Dancer." Then she stood and started packing his saddlebags with cold chicken and some other things.
Buck knew better then to argue with her, so he went and saddled his horse. As he brought Wind Dancer around to the front of the house, Meg met him at the gate.
"Here, have fun." Meg said as she handed him his saddlebag.
Buck nodded. Taking his saddlebags and putting them on his saddle, he mounted up. Smiling down he said, "Thanks Meg. If you see Caly, tell her hi for me. "
"I sure will." Meg answered
Buck smiled and headed towards town. As he was riding down the street he saw Corey go into the store, so he dismounted, tied Wind Dancer to the post and headed inside. On his way in he bumped into someone. Looking up he saw Corey. "Hello Corey. I was hoping to see you today."
Corey smiled, "Hello Buck. Is everything okay with Meg?" She asked concerned.
"Oh no, shes fine. I was hoping you would join me on a picnic. Meg packed a wonderful lunch, I'm sure."
"Oh, I would love to just let me post this letter. Then we can go." Buck nodded and walked into the post office with her and waited while she handed it over to Blythe.
After escorting Corey to Wind Dancer, he helped her onto his horse and she sat behind him as they headed out of town. They found a good spot by the river. Helping her down he grabbed his bedroll for them to sit on. Spreading it out they sat talking while they ate. They had a wonderful time.
Buck escorted Corey back to the hotel. Then he headed back to Megs house happy that he had been able to spend time with Corey.
