JULY 22, 1860
Caller Bob rode out to the express station. He had two more cards to deliver. One was for Lee and the other was for Buck.
Riding up to the bunkhouse Caller Bob saw Buck and Lee coming out of the barn. He called to them as he walked towards them.
Buck and Lee both nodded and met him at the corral. Buck figured he knew why Caller Bob was here, but he asked anyway, "What brings you out here again?"
"Well, I have cards for you and Lee. Someone thought it would be good for you to switch jobs with someone for a while." Caller Bob said as he handed them both their cards.
Lee read her card then looked at Caller Bob saying, "This can't be right. How can I switch with Caly?"
"Caly's the perfect person for you to switch with. She helps her father out around the ranch." Buck said as he nodded and winked at Lee.
Lee thought about it, then said, "Maybe youre right. But I can't see Caly delivering the mail."
Placing a hand on her shoulder Buck replied, "Don't worry about Caly, she can handle it. Shes pretty tough." Hoping that Lee would know what he meant, Buck gave her a big grin. Lee agreed with him.
Knowing that Buck had gotten Lee to agree, Caller Bob smiled at them. He knew Buck would agree to play barber to raise money for the town fund. "Well, I need to get over to the Johnsons place. I have cards for them, too. You both should get ready to start your new jobs in the morning."
"Mind if we ride with you over there?" Lee asked. "I know Buck has a date with Caly tonight, and I need to talk to her father about helping out."
"No, I dont mind," Caller Bob answered.
Buck and Lee headed into the barn and saddled their horses. Lee led them from the barn while Buck ran into the bunkhouse to change. Lee wanted to whistle at Buck when he joined them, but knew she better not since Caller Bob was there, and he would think it strange if she did. Caller Bob didnt know that she was girl. Lee thought Buck looked really nice, and was glad that he seemed to be liking Caly more and more each day.
The three of them rode off towards the S&J Ranch. Caly was hanging out the laundry when she heard some horses come into the yard. Peeking around the sheet she just finished hanging, she smiled when she saw Buck was with the mayor and Lee.
Wiping her hands on her apron she walked out to meet them. "Lee, Caller Bob, Buck, hello."
"Hello Caly is your father here? I have to talk to him." Caller Bob asked as he dismounted.
Caly nodded saying, "Hes in the barn."
"Here's ya card, Caly. Someone thought you should switch jobs. They didn't think you would mind." Caller Bob said as he handed her a gift card.
Caly looked at her card and smiled. She winked at Lee. Lee smiled and winked back. Buck shook his head knowing that they were closer and it might just help them both.
Lee and Caller Bob headed for the barn.
Caly looked at Buck confused, and then it dawned on her. Blushing she said, "Oh, I'm sorry. Give me fifteen minutes, and I'll be ready."
Buck smiled and nodded to her and watched her run into the house.
Buck waited on the porch for Caly. Just then Michael brought the buckboard to the porch
saying, "I thought you would like to go to town in this."
Buck walked over to Michael, "Thank you, Michael. Im hoping Caly will dress like a lady tonight."
"Now you know I do when I have a reason to." Caly said as she descended the stairs and walked over to them wearing the same dress she had worn to the Valentines Day dance with her hair straight down her back.
"Sis, you look great." Michael said.
"Um . . . very pretty." Was all Buck could say.
Caly smiled at both of them. Buck helped her into the buckboard. Climbing into the buckboard, he starts the team towards town.
Pulling up in front of the Silver Spoon, Buck helped Caly down from the buckboard and offered her his arm. Taking his arm Caly allowed him to lead her into the restaurant.
Charlie greeted them at the door. "You look lovely tonight Caly. Buck you are lucky to have a beautiful lady to dine with tonight." Charlie comments as he leads them to their table.
Pulling her chair out Buck said, "I would have to agree with you, Charlie. Hard to believe this is the same young lady that rides as well as I do."
As she sat down Caly replied, "Thank you both for the lovely complement."
Lilly took their order, and while they waited for their food, Buck told Caly about him and Luke switching jobs. They both laughed at the thought of Luke delivering the mail.
"Are you sure you want to do this? I mean its not an easy job." Buck asked.
"Yes, I'm sure. Besides if Lee and Lou can do it, why can't I then. I help out around the ranch all the time."
"How did you know about them? I mean its not like everyone knows." Buck asked with a puzzled look on his face.
"I've known from the beginning. Don't worry, I wont tell anyone." Caly said smiling back at him.
Buck smiled knowing how well she could keep a secret. "I know how well you keep secrets."
Caly blushed and looked down at her hands knowing that he was talking about her feelings for him. She looked up and saw the gentle smile that had stole her heart from the first time she had seen him and talked with him. Smiling back she said, "I'm glad we were able to do this."
As they sat there talking and eating Cody walked over. "Well, I hear you and Luke are switching places for awhile."
Buck and Caly looked up at the blue eyed rider and nodded. "Think you can handle running the store?" Caly replied.
Cody nodded saying, "No problem." As he joined them at the table, he leaned over to Caly and said, "I see you told him how you feel. Sorry about what happened to make you tell him."
Caly started to blush, but then she looked up with a look of terror on her face when she remembered how she had told Buck about her feelings for him. She stood and ran from the restaurant.
Buck stood saying as he was paying, "Good going, Cody. She was finally forgetting about that. " Leaving Cody sitting there with his mouth open, Buck ran after Caly. Cody shook his head knowing he would have to apologize to both of them, so he stood and went after them.
Buck finally caught up with Caly at the edge of town. He took her in his arms to try to calm her, and he said, "Caly please don't let what happen throw you backwards. You've come so far. Cody tends to put his foot in his mouth. You know that. You know he wouldn't hurt you deliberately."
Before Caly could answer Cody walked up saying, "Hes right. I wouldn't hurt you." He gently pulled her from Bucks arms and into his strong embrace and said, "Im so sorry. What I said was wrong. I shouldn't have brought that up. Will you forgive me?"
Caly nodded trying to control the tears that finally fell. She knew Cody wouldn't hurt her on purpose. Sniffling she pulled out of his arms and looked at both men. One she loved and the other she trusted with her life and was her friend, just as all the riders were.
Wiping a stray tear from her cheek she smiled at them saying, "Just think next time, Cody please. I don't want anyone else to know what he did to me. Okay?"
Cody nodded and gave her that silly grin of his. Caly couldn't help but smile. He always could make her smile when no one else could.
The three of them headed back to where Buck had left the buckboard. Cody helped Caly into the buckboard while saying, "Enjoy delivering the mail."
Seeing the questioning look on her face, he held up his hand to stop her question before she could ask it. "I know what youre going to ask. How did I know? Michael asked for my help. He wasn't sure about having you and Lee switch jobs. You know he wont ask Buck for help."
Caly nodded smiling as she remembered how Michael felt about Buck.
"We better get back so she can get to the station. Have fun at the store." Buck said.
Cody nodded, "Always Buck. Be careful, Caly." Then he stepped back from the buckboard and watched them head out towards Calys place.
After reaching the ranch Caly bid Buck and Lee goodnight and told them she would see them in the morning. She watched as they rode off. Then she went into the house and started to pack a few things. She would have to dress like a boy. It would be a first, but she could handle it. The only problem would be her hair, but she could hide it under her hat.
