MAY 17, 1861
Caly opened the door and stepped out onto the porch. As she thought about the new
church being built, she leaned against the post and watched the wind play across the
grass. Buck quietly walked up behind her and slipped an arm around her. "Close your
eyes," he whispered in her ear.
Beaming, Caly closed her eyes. "What is it?"
Buck slipped something under her nose. "Smell first."
Grinning, Caly smelled. "A Rose. Oh Buck, I love roses." She opened her eyes and
turned to him. "It's beautiful. Thank you."
After kissing her deeply, Buck said, "In my tribe, when a man gives a women a flower,
it means he wants to make love to her."
Caly blushed as she took his hand and led him into the house. "My father won't be
back from the cattle drive for another day or so." Buck smiled as he allowed her to
lead him into her bedroom.
Steven was glad that the cattle drive didn't take as long as it usually did. He had missed
Anjenette and his daughter, Caly. He smiled as he rode through town and heard that the
church was going to be built soon. While he was gone, he had worried about Caly's
nightmares coming back since he wasn't home. He had noticed that she hadn't had a
nightmare since Javier and Lilly's wedding. But with him not home, they could have
returned, and she would be all alone.
He had bought Caly a small jewelry box, and he wanted to give it to her so he said,
"Michael, take care of the horses, I'm going to see your sister."
"Ok, Pa," Michael said as he led the horses to the barn.
Steven went into the house and when he didn't see Caly on the first floor, he assumed that
she was checking on the milk cows or the cattle that had been left behind. I'll just leave
the jewelry box on her vanity, so that when she goes into her room, she will be surprised.
Steven had the shock of his life when he opened the door to Caly's room. He saw Caly's
bare back and what looked like a naked Buck underneath her. There was no mistaking what
was going on. "BUCK! Get dressed and in my office in ten minutes. Calamity, get
dressed and stay here until I'm ready for you." He said in a quiet anger.
Caly and Buck pulled the covers up over them as they heard his command. When Steven used
Caly's full name, she said, "Papa"
Steven held up his hand and said, "I don't want to hear it right now. Stay here until
I'm ready to talk to you." Steven left and went to wait for Buck in his office.
Caly heard Buck mumble, "I'm dead."
"Buck, no matter what happens, I don't regret this."
"No matter what happens, I'll always love you."
"I love you, too." Caly said as a tear slid down her face.
Buck gave Caly one last kiss before going downstairs to Steven's office.
When Michael walked inside, he could tell by the way his father was stomping down the
stairs that he was angry. The red face also was a clue that his father was not a happy
camper. Michael decided that it would be best if he was not around to get caught in the
cross fire.
"Pa, I'm going to see Jesse."
Steven just nodded. He was glad that Michael would not be around to hear any of this as he
entered his office. Steven sat behind his desk trying to compose himself. He had to keep
reminding himself that Buck was the one that had helped Caly through the rape. That may be
the only thing that saves that boy's life. Steven thought.
When Buck entered his office, Steven said, "Caly hasn't had a nightmare in a while
and because of what you two were doing they may come back. I want you to leave, and I
think it would be best if you didn't come back."
While Buck would have rather died, he did as he was asked. He knew that Steven needed to
digest what he had seen. Maybe he would let Caly see him in a few days. He was just mad
right now. Stopping and thinking about it Buck could understand why Steven was mad. After
all Caly was Steven's little girl. Maybe after Steven calmed down and thought about it, he
would realize that it was because of Caly and him making love that her nightmares had gone
away.
Caly saw Buck leave from her bedroom window. She raced down the stairs and asked,
"What did you do?"
Steven turned around and took her by the arm and led her to her bedroom and said through
clenched teeth, "I told you to stay here! I'm not ready to talk to you yet." As
he let go of her she fell onto her bed.
"Well, we need to talk." Caly said as she sat on her bed and rubbed her arm.
"I can't talk to you right now. I'm too angry."
"Well, I don't see what you're so upset about. We didn't do anything that you and
Anjenette don't do."
"I'm not an unmarried 19 year old girl neither!"
"But you are an unmarried man."
"But that's different."
"How is it different?"
"I can't get pregnant!"
"It's not fair! You could get Anjenette pregnant."
"We are not talking about me. We are taking about you!"
"It's not fair. It's just not fair." Caly said as tears flowed down her face.
Steven's heart broke when he saw the tears. "I'm more worried about your nightmares
coming back."
"Because of the love that Buck and I share, my nightmares have gone away."
"I can't trust you two together anymore. I want you to stay away from him."
Caly was so hurt that she ran out of the house. She was so upset that she didn't even
saddle Star. She rode as fast as she could out to the station.
Buck was filling Lee in on his near death experience when Caly rode into the station.
Jesse and Michael were talking about the cattle drive when Michael saw that Caly had been
crying. He decided to go to his sister.
When Caly saw Michael coming towards her, she said, "Please, leave me alone."
Michael knew by her tone that she was not upset at him, but just needed some time alone, so he decided to give it to her. He watched her enter the bunkhouse and then Lee came out of the bunkhouse. He continued to tell Jesse about the cattle drive.
Caly just cried in Bucks arms for awhile and he just held her. After a while, Michaels curiosity got he better of him and he went to go see what was wrong with Caly. When he stepped onto the porch he heard Caly tell Buck, "My father doesnt want us to be together. I think that we better obey his wishes." Just until I can figure out away to see you without him knowing.
Michael went home confused. He had to ask his father some questions. Caly on the other hand couldnt face her father right then. She went to a favorite spot of hers and Bucks and just watched the sun set.
Michael found his father still in his office. "Pa, why are you making Buck and Caly break up? You told me that it was good that they were together."
Damn. I shouldnt have let him go the station. I wasnt thinking clearly. He probably overheard Buck tell one of the other riders that he wasnt allowed over here anymore. "They just need some time apart." Was all he said.
