MARCH 29, 1860
"Why Kid, what are you doing here?" Blythe looked at him in surprise. "I
thought you had a run today."
Kid grinned sheepishly. "I asked one of the other riders to switch with me. I was
kinda hoping you would go to dinner with me tonight, like we talked about at the
Valentine's dance."
"I would love to," Blythe smiled. Now that the weather was warmer, she would be
able to wear the dress she had won.
Kid arrived promptly at seven, dressed in his Sunday suit. He suddenly looked very boyish
and shy, with his hands behind his back.
"Good evening Kid," Blythe greeted him as she opened the door.
"And good evening to you," Kid pulled a bouquet of wild flowers from behind his
back. "I picked these for you."
"They're beautiful," Blythe inhaled the scent of daffodils and violets.
"No, you are beautiful," Kid smiled shyly. "That dress looks pretty on
you."
"Thank you, Kid," Blythe blushed lightly.
Kid held the door of the restaurant open for Blythe to walk in. They were seated at a
table by the window, where they could watch all the people passing by. They talked about
everything, their families, their homes. They both were from Virginia, so that was their
favorite topic. They told each other why they had moved away. They even figured out they
had the same birthday! After Kid had walked her home, Blythe stayed awake, remembering the
evening. She finally fell asleep with a smile on her face.
