AUGUST 6, 1860

Beauregard was lying on his bed in his hotel room just staring at the ceiling and thinking. He had a smile on his lips.

With a big old sack thrown over his back he glanced down the stairs. Good! No one was there, so he silently crept down the stairs. Glancing around again he saw no one, so he made his way to the door. He opened the door slowly and peeked outside. He knew that Cody wasn't in the store. He was eating lunch with Blythe and Kid, so all he had to do was deal with Javier. He figured he could swear Javier to secrecy, and if he had to bribe him he would.

Seeing no one on the street he quickly ran over to the general store. He pulled the door open and quickly stepped inside. He walked down to the counter and scanned the room. He didn't see Javier. This must be his lucky day.

Beauregard sat the sack down and took out the presents. He laid them on the post office counter, and he took out a piece of paper and scribbled these words on it, 'Please deliver these to Destiny and Jemima.'

He looked at all the packages and smiled. He hoped they would like them. At least if they didn't know who it was from at first, they wouldn't toss them out before opening them.

He peeked around the corner and seeing no one he started to walk out. He took a few steps and immediately stopped because he saw Jacy stepping into the store. Lots of rapid thoughts went through his head and he finally settled on one. Ducking behind the table, he waited to see what would happen.

Jacy came up to the counter. She knocked on it hoping that Cody would hear it and come out from the backroom.

Hearing a noise out front, he came out to inspect the visitor. He smiled as he saw the lovely Jacy. Jacy smiled back at the young lad.

A little disappointed that it was Javier instead of Cody, Jacy asked, "So where's Cody?"

"I'm sorry Jacy. He's not here. Him, Kid and Blythe are having lunch at the Silver Spoon." Javier replied but continued as he saw the frown on Jacy's face. "I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you joined them. Kid and Blythe would probably thank you proficiently for stealing Cody away from them." He gave her a devilish grin.

"Ok, thanks Javier." She turned to leave and walked slowly towards the door. Javier returned to the back room.

As she wandered down the aisle she wondered where Beauregard was. She saw him going into the store with a bag. He was being very sneaky about it, too. As she was talking to Javier she could see the post office room, and she noticed presents sitting on the counter. So as she was going out the door, she thought Kid must really love Blythe to give her so many presents.

Jacy walked out of the store still mystified. She wondered what had happened to Beauregard. The only thing she could think of was that he had slipped out the back door. But why would he do that?

Jacy was too shy to barge in on Kid, Blythe and Cody, so she went back to the saloon and sat down on the bench in front of it.

Beauregard was glad when Jacy left, and Javier went back to the storeroom. He stood up and felt a cramp in his leg. He shook it and massaged it a little and then silently but hurriedly went to the door. He opened it and glanced on to the street. There was no one there. He slipped out and went back to his hotel room. Unbeknownst to him, Jacy had seen him leave.

Jacy wondered why he had been so sneaky. What was he up to? Could it have been him that had left those presents in the post office? If so why?

Jimmy called to her, so she gave up trying to figure Beauregard out and went inside.

**********

He was stirred out of his thoughts by a knock on his door. He opened it to find Marta with his lunch. He handed her a tip, thanked her, and as she left, he closed the door and sat down to eat.
