JULY 14, 1860
Beauregard was between a rock and a hard place. The railroad, his railroad was heading this way. They were laying tracks faster than he could think, and Dreamville was right in its path.
He had stopped trying to put articles in the paper. His partner had decided on a different approach to the demise of Dreamville, but his partner wouldn't give him any clue as to what it was. Beauregard was just to sit back and relax. His partner had it all well in hand.
Beauregard had come to like the people in Dreamville, and was kind of reluctant to have it turned into a ghost town. He even thought that Destiny might be willing to give him another chance. She at least hadn't been running off every time she saw him. He decided that he would try to make amends with Jacy. That would be a step in the right direction. If she could forgive him for being such a jerk than maybe he would have a chance with Destiny, too.
Beauregard went over to the saloon. He was pulling at his brains trying to decide how to approach Jacy when Steven came his way. "What can I get ya?" Steven asked as he stopped in front of Beauregard.
"Um a beer will be fine." Beauregard replied while staring at Jacy. Steven watched Beauregard for a few seconds wondering why he was staring at Jacy. He poured the beer into a mug and sat it in front of Beuregard. Steven then walked down to the other end of the bar to clean some more mugs, but he kept an eye on Beauregard.
Jacy and Jimmy were in a heated discussion about ideas for bringing people in the saloon. Jimmy didn't think it was a great idea to turn the place into a square dancing club. The true owners wouldn't like the idea. He was sure of that. Though Jacy had a good argument for it because it was so boring just sitting around doing nothing. Hardly a soul even stuck their heads inside the saloon since the bordello had everything a man could want.
Jimmy had even been tempted to go over to the bordello. If not to check out the competition than he suggested dragging some customers back to the saloon. Jacy didn't want any fighting breaking out in Dreamville, so she persuaded him not to go to the bordello. But she never once told him that she had dreamt of doing the same thing.
Seeing Beauregard enter the saloon took all the fizzle out of Jacy. She became silent as she watched him order a beer. Jimmy frowned as he wondered why Jacy had suddenly stopped talking. He glanced around to see Beauregard standing at the bar. Jimmy's first speculation was that Jacy had shut up because she was amazed that someone had come into the saloon. But on watching the two he quickly changed his mind. Jacy seemed upset that Beauregard was here. He wondered why.
Completely worn out and upset that Beauregard was here, Jacy decided to give up arguing with Jimmy. "Alright you're right. I give up."
Shocked that she had finally given in, Jimmy's eyes grew big, and he studied her face. She looked defeated, and Jimmy's compassionate nature took over. "If we really owned this place, Jacy, I would let you do whatever you want."
Jacy looked up and saw that Jimmy was sincere. She smiled, but it vanished soon because out of the corner of her eye she saw Beauregard coming towards them.
"Good evening, Jacy, Jimmy." Beauregard said as he approached them. Not sure how to continue, he waited for them to respond.
"Good evening," Jimmy tilted his head to look at Beauregard.
"Hello," Jacy weakly said.
"Can I buy you a drink?" Beauregard asked.
She didn't know what Beauregard was up to. She hadn't really talked to him for weeks. She still didn't want anyone to know that she was lying about her pa, and she was afraid Beauregard might say something in front of Jimmy. "I'd like one." Jacy stood up and walked to the bar. Turning her head to make sure that Beauregard followed her, and since he was she continued to the bar. She ordered a sarsaparilla, and as Steven went to get it, she whispered between clenched teeth, "What do you want?"
"I'm just trying to be social." Beauregard charmingly said. She didn't believe him, and he saw that by her facial expression. "Really, I am. I don't want anything. I've given up on wanting you to print articles for me. I just want to be your friend. I won't," He didn't finish his sentence as Steven brought her drink. As soon as Steven left, Beauregard continued in a whisper, "I won't tell anybody about your pa." Surprised she just gawked at him. Why had he changed? She wouldn't speculate. She was just glad that he had changed his mind, and that he wouldn't tell anybody about her pa. Jacy sipped her sarsaparilla. She didn't really like the stuff but she didn't want anyone to think her a wimp.
"To make up for my awful behavior, may I treat you to supper tonight." Jacy wasn't so sure about accepting, but she didn't want him to get mad at her. He might get so angry with her that he might tell someone about her pa, so she agreed to have supper with him. Beauregard held out his arm, and Jacy took it. They walked out of the saloon arm in arm, and Jimmy was mystified. He wondered what was going on between them.
Beauregard and Jacy entered the dining room, and Laura greeted them and showed them to a table. She took their order and then left to prepare their meals. Half-way through the meal, Jacy began to relax. One might even think that Jacy was enjoying herself because she kept a smile on all through supper, but deep down Jacy was still suspicious of Beauregard. She didn't trust people very easily, especially men.
After their meal Beauregard escorted her back to her room in the saloon. He didn't ask to come in. He just said goodnight and made sure that she got inside. He left the saloon with a certain young rider watching him, so he said goodnight to him, too.
