FEBRUARY 3, 1860
Beauregard wandered through the town that morning without a certain destiny. He had decided to go to the barbershop, but he changed his mind and went back to the hotel. He found a comfortable chair in the dinner room and asked Laura to bring him some coffee.
Justin and his sister Samantha walked in quickly. Beauregard noticed the man acting nervously and seeming very tired as the two sat down at the table placed right in front of Beauregard's table.
Laura brought the coffee and went to see what Justin and Samantha would order.
"So what can I do for you two today?" Laura asked smiling.
"Just some coffee, Mrs. Brooks," Samantha replied.
A couple minutes later Laura brought their coffee and walked back to the kitchen, leaving just the three of them in the room. Beauregard opened the newspaper and started reading while Justin and Samantha argued about something, Justin tried to keep his voice low, but it was almost impossible for Beauregard not to hear the man talking.
"I should tell her Sam. Jacy has the right to know," Justin said.
"I don't know Justin. You should stay out of other peoples business." Samantha affirmed, as she tasted the coffee.
"But her father is alive, and she doesn't know about it." Justin whispered wishing Sam could help him to decide if he should tell Jacy or not.
Beauregard moved in his chair after hearing what Justin had just said. He stopped reading the paper trying to hear more of Justin's conversation, but the man was keeping his voice down.
"Justin, you should forget that, let it go." Samantha insisted. She knew Justin was having sleeping problems because of what Mr. Hagan had told him.
"But Sam, it isn't fair to Jacy and Melissa. Mr. Hagan knows that the girls father is alive, and he didn't tell them instead he left town, and the girls think their father is dead," Justin affirmed.
Mr. Hagan lied to his granddaughters, Beauregard thought, that was an opportunity for him, and he knew he could use this knowledge later.
Samantha noticed Beauregard staring at them, "Let's go home Justin. We can talk about this later, ok?" She suggested. Justin understood Sam's look and agreed.
Samantha and Justin finished their coffee quickly and paid Laura. They stood up and walked out of the hotel. Beauregard dropped the newspaper on the table. "I love secrets, " he whispered to himself.
"What Mr. Beauregard? " Laura asked as she overheard Beauregard talking out loud.
"Oh, nothing, Mrs. Brooks." He replied standing up and leaving the newspaper and the money for the coffee on the table.
Laura smiled at him as he left the dinner room and walked towards the stairs to go back to his room.
