OCTOBER 15, 1860

She heard the excited chatter as she walked down the hallway and into the parlor. Anjanette stopped in the doorway and silently watched as Dean and Vanessa talked, and Elena tried not to look interested while she sat sideways in a plush chair, her legs dangling over the arm, in the corner of the room.

" . . . and she said yes."

"Well that's wonderful Dean." Vanessa exclaimed. "Don't you think so Elena?"

"Yeah woohoo." She replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes.

Dean frowned and Vanessa shook her head at the other girl's sullen attitude. It was then that Dean noticed Anjanette standing in the doorway. "Oh hello, Anjanette."

All eyes turned to the woman who smiled and took a seat beside Vanessa. "What are we talking about?"

"The Halloween party the Saunders' are having." Vanessa answered.

"I see, and how many of you are going?"

Dean cleared his throat and sighed. "Well including Tally, we all are."

"I see . . ." She frowned. "Well then, I'll just have to close up shop for the evening."

"We could always open afterward." Elena suggested. Both Dean and Vanessa shot her dirty looks.

"A wonderful idea Elena."

"Uh, Anjanette, I have a date, and I'd hate to have to cut it short because of work, surely you can understand that?"

Anjanette's eyebrows shot up, so he'd finally asked her, she thought and turned to Vanessa. "How about you?"

"Well, I have a date too." She said softly.

Elena frowned. "Well I don't, so I can work if you like."

"Well, I can't run the bordello alone, so I guess you'll all have the night off." She smiled at the group then sat back. "I guess I should make an appearance too. I can drum up business."

"Really?" Dean asked.

"Yes. Let's see what should I go as . . .?" She thought for a moment and then slowly a grin appeared on her face, "Well, Halloween is a night to be what you aren't right?"

Dean nodded. "I'm going as a matador."

"I'll be something that I'd never be confused for."

"What's that?" Vanessa asked.

"A nun." At her statement the group began laughing softly.

"Well, that certainly is different." Elena said.

"Yes I suppose it is. I'll have to go out to the dress shop to order it so if you all will excuse me-" She rose and turned towards the door. "I have a feeling this party will be enlightening for everyone."
