MAY 18, 1861

Anjanette woke up thirsty. Since she didn't want to wake Steven up, she grabbed a robe and went downstairs to Steven's kitchen to get something to drink. When she saw Caly out on the porch looking out into the night sky, she went to see if everything was okay. Anjanette saw that Caly had been crying and asked, "Are you upset about me and your father?"

"Oh, no. Actually, I'm happy for you. You make him happy, like he was with Mama." Caly reassured her.

"Then why are you so upset?" Anjanette inquired.

"Because Pa won't let me and Buck see each other anymore." Caly said careful not to let on that she was trying to devise a plan to see Buck without her father knowing. She hadn't even told Buck she was trying to figure out a way to see him because if Michael by some chance had overheard, he might tell Pa. If she hadn't seen Michael at the station she would have told Buck, but Michael was there, and she couldn't take any chances of her father finding out.

Anjanette was confused. Steven had always talked highly of Buck. He had his full trust in him and now he wasn't letting Caly see him anymore. It just didn't make sense. "Why not?" Anjanette questioned.

"Well, . . . he kinda . . . um . . . walked in . . . um . . . while Buck and I . . . were . . . um . . . alone." Caly tried to choose her words carefully as she blushed. Why is this so hard to tell her this? I mean she owns a bordello. The fact that Anjanette owned a bordello made no difference to Caly. She just thought it would make it easier to talk to her about it.

She talked with Meg about it when she was trying to get information for Lee so that Lee didn't get pregnant. Why couldn't she talk about it with someone that did it for a living, or hired girls to do it for a living?

Anjanette saw the way that Caly danced around with her words and her body language and knew immediately what Caly and Buck were doing when Steven walked in. "I can imagine him getting upset over that. Any father would."

"Well, it's more than that really."

Putting a hand on Caly's arm, Anjanette asked, "What do you mean?"

"The nightmares came back."

"Sometimes when you have a nightmare, it seems better after you talk about it."

"I've tried but it hasn't worked."

"What are they about?" When Caly didn't respond, Anjanette continued, "I won't tell anybody about them. I've had some pretty silly nightmares myself."

"In my dreams, I am taken from the kitchen by these men to a little shack. No matter how hard I try I can't fight them off. Then they hold me down while the leader of the group has his way with me. In some of the dreams, Buck and the riders get there before the other men have their turn, but sometimes they don't get there at all, and the other men have their turn.

"Oh my God! You weren't just beaten, were you?" Anjanette realized that she had spoken out loud when Caly shook her head. She took Caly in her arms and just held her like a child. After Caly's tears, subsided, Anjanette said, "I'm sorry it happened to you. You didn't deserve to be treated like that. Nobody deserves to be treated like that." After awhile Anjanette carefully asked, "Do you think that the reason the nightmares came back was because of what you and Buck were doing?"

Caly shook her head vigorously, "Oh no. Matter of fact that stopped the nightmares. They came back when Pa wouldn't let me see Buck again."

Anjanette realized that Buck was the one who had helped her get over her nightmares. When she no longer felt the safety that he had provided, the nightmares had returned. She had to talk to Steven about this, but at the same time she couldn't let him know what Caly had told her.

When Steven woke to an empty bed, he figured that Anjanette was getting something to drink. He thought he would check in on Caly to make sure her nightmares hadn't returned. When he saw that Caly's bed was empty, he hoped that she was on the porch like usual after a nightmare. In the past that's where he knew she would be, but now he just didn't know her anymore. She hadn't said more than two words to him since he had walked in on her and Buck. Sure enough he found both his girl and his daughter on the swing.

Anjanette had an arm around Caly and Caly had her head on Anjanette's shoulder. At least Caly was accepting Anjanette. "Is everything okay?"

When Caly didn't speak, Anjanette said, "Yeah, everything is fine. Just having some girl talk."

Steven knew that the only reason that Caly would be out here at this hour was because she had a nightmare. He didn't say anything because it looked like that Anjanette had gotten through a wall that Caly had built up around her. This was one time when Steven hated to be right though. The nightmares had come back because of Buck and her . . . he couldn't even think about it. He was still shocked at what he had seen.

Caly and Anjanette stayed out on the porch a little while longer and then went up to bed. When Anjanette walked into Steven's room he asked, "What did she say?"

"I promised I wouldn't tell anyone. But maybe you ought to rethink about keeping Buck away from her." Anjanette said softly.

"He brought her nightmares back! I saw it in her face."

"Steven, sometimes making love to someone who you love and loves you back can help you to heal from a rape. And being apart from that person that you love can make you feel unsafe again."

Steven couldn't understand at that moment what Anjanette was talking about. How can that help you to heal? "I'm going to talk to her." He said as he left the room.

I just hope she opens up and talks to him. I hate seeing them not talking to each other. It makes Steven so miserable, Anjanette thought.

Steven walked into Caly's bedroom and saw her starring out of her window. "Caly, I think we need to talk." Caly shrugged her shoulders. "I know that your nightmares have come back because of what you and Buck did, but I still want to be here for you. I want to help."

Caly tuned around her face red with anger when she heard the word help.

"Help! You're the one that brought them back when you told Buck to leave and not to come back! He took them away!" Caly yelled.

As Steven realized that this wasn't the first time that Caly had raised her voice to him, he said, "Watch your tone with me, young lady."

Caly walked to her bed and laid down and tried to go back to sleep.

Steven said, "We'll talk in the morning." Then he left and went back to his room. He was hurt that Caly hadn't talked to him about this before. She usually told him everything. Now she wasn't even telling him 'Good Morning.' He was beginning to think that maybe Anjanette was right. He wondered if he should have pushed marriage instead of pushing them apart.
