FEBRUARY 27, 1860
Absalom jumped on the cart and made his way into town. He had one more delivery to make before he was allowed to have the rest of the day off. He longed for a break as he had been working harder than normal lately, and was happy to have the rest off the day to do as he pleased. He was busy daydreaming about what he was going to do with his extra time, so wasnt paying attention to the horse plodding along the road in front of him. He sat up in surprise when the cart hit a large hole on the side of the road, this dislocated the wheel and sent Absalom bumping to a rough stop.
"Oh NO! Why me," he exclaimed aloud as he jumped down to inspect the damage. The wheel was barely hanging on, and Absalom knew there was no way for him to fix it by himself. Lucky for him someone was heading in the opposite direction and he didnt have to wait long before an offer of assistance was hollered his way.
"Need a hand with that wheel?" A well-built man asked as he jumped down from his horse.
"Oh yes, please, theres no way I could put it back on by myself," Absalom answered as he tried to hold the wheel in place.
"No worries, it just needs a bit of weight behind it," the large man then helped reposition the wheel much to Absaloms delight.
When they had the wheel it in its rightful place, Absalom held out his hand to the man
"Thank you so much. I was sure Id have to walk into town to get help. Im Absalom by the way."
Joshua took the offered hand, "Well nice to meet you, Im Joshua from the mill."
Absalom grinned back as he jumped on the cart, "If it wasnt for you, I would have lost my afternoon off."
"Glad to be of assistance lad," Joshua called back as they headed off in opposite directions.
