JUNE CARTER CASH STORY

Valerie June Carter was born on June 23,1929, in Maces Spring, Virginia, the middle daughter
of Maybelle and Ezra Carter, in a nine room house at the base of Clinch Mountain. Her mother
was part of the original Carter Family along with June's aunt Sara and uncle A.P. At the age
of ten, June began her performing career, singing with her sisters, Helen and Anita. They moved
from her beloved Virginia to Texas where June found a very different world than the one she had
know and they sang on the legendary Mexican border stations. In the years that followed, the
Carter Family was heard on radio stations all over the south. Maybelle, Helen, June and Anita,
eventually became the Carter Family and performed in school houses, etc. as well as on radio.
In 1950 they joined the Grand Ole Opry where they were members for seventeen years.

In the years that followed, June not only sang but played the banjo, autoharp, and guitar
(plus little harmonicas and the piano). June recorded "Baby, It's Cold Outside", a hit comedy
record with Homer And Jethro in 1949. She has received two Grammys for duets with Johnny Cash
"Jackson" and "If I Were A Carpenter", a Country Music Association Award for vocal duo and
several BMI honors for here song-writing. "Ring Of Fire", which she co wrote with Merle Kilgore
has been recorded by everyone from Dwight Yoakam and Earl Scruggs to Duanne Eddy and Olivia
Newton-John and we must not forget Johnny Cash!

June is an actress and a commedienne. She attended drama school in New York and has appeared
in movies such as ROAD TO NASHVILLE, GOSPEL ROAD, STAGECOACH and MURDER IN COWETE COUNTRY. Her

"From The Heart", in which June shares her personal life ans feelings was published in 1987 and
in 1989 she put together "Mother Maybelle's Cookbook". It has Carter Family receipes but June
has added family stories throughout the book, making it a real treasure. She calls it
"a cookbook of life." She has also written a screenplay, "Wildwood Flower", which she hopes
will soon be seen on film.

June has two daughters, Carlene and Rosey, who have followed the Carter Family musical
tradition and are great performers. In 1968, June married Johnny Cash and two years later John
Carter Cash was born. He, too, has become a performer. June's children as well as John's
